Wayne County Memorial VFW Post 4535 has announced the winners of its scholarships this year. Jalysse Kinney from Fairfield Community High School, Jaxson Youngblood from Wayne City High School, and Lexi Locke from Cisne High School will each be awarded a $2,000 scholarship. No injuries were reported in a single-vehicle accident southeast of the New Hope Curve on Highway 45 yesterday morning. County deputies say 25-year-old Elizabeth A. Carpenter swerved to avoid a deer, traveled off the east side of the highway, struck a concrete culvert, went down an embankment, and came to rest. Carpenter was cited for operating an uninsured vehicle. Two Fairfield residents were arrested by Fairfield police and booked in the Wayne County Jail last night. 30-year-old Steven M. 23-year-old Toria Emerson, one of three people charged in connection with the death of 32-year-old Eldorado resident Chase Mitchell last year, appeared in Saline County Court yesterday in a bond-reduction hearing. Mike Dreith was elected Fairfield Mayor last night, defeating Teresa Robinson and Nate McGaha. Dreith collected a total of 762 votes. His opponents had 302 and 48, respectively, after unofficial totals. In Cisne, Roy Atwood was re-elected Mayor, defeating Ken Neff and Christy King. Atwood had 77 votes compared to 68 and six from his opponents. Fairfield’s Alderman races were tightly contested, with one still up in the air. In Ward 2, Larry Vest, Angel Maguire, and Clifford Reever each had 58 votes. County Clerk Liz Ann Woodrow says three mail-in ballots remain at large.
