Marine Corps Commandant Gen. David Berger at Twentynine Palms.
WASHINGTON: An ambitious new Marine Corps planning document outlines historic changes in how the service plans to equip, organize, and train over the next decade to meet the challenges of Chinese and Russian competition, ushering in changes not seen since the 1920s.
The unreleased 180-page document is meant as a first iteration of an effort to create a series of small, agile units tasked with air defense, anti-ship and submarine warfare, and seizing, holding and resupplying small temporary bases as part of an island-hopping campaign in the Pacific. ....

The Marine Corps should purchase fewer CH-53K King Stallions while it is still testing the helicopter’s capabilities, a new report from the Government Accountability Office found.
In addition to its recommendation to reduce the low-rate initial production purchases of the Corps’ future heavy lift helicopter, the report raised concerns over the program’s price and Sikorsky’s ability to produce the helicopters at the planned rate. ....

A Marine secures a perimeter near an expeditionary advanced base during Pacific Blitz 2019.
WASHINGTON: The Marine Corps commandant has for the first time put Russia alongside Iran, North Korea, and extremist groups as areas that will “continue to pose threats,” while elevating China to the undisputed top of threats facing US policy makers.
