Delta Variant cases climbing thanks to mutation

Delta Variant cases climbing thanks to mutation

(WSIL) The C.D.C. says the new Delta Variant may be responsible for up to twenty percent of COVID-19 cases reported in the last two weeks.
SIU Associate Professor, Keith Gagnon, says the Delta Variant likely won t be any more detrimental to the body once it s there. It may create a larger viral load in the body, and has proven to be much more transmissible. Since the level of transmissibility is higher you are more likely to get it if you re not vaccinated.
It s easier to pass on. It may also have some other features about it, like it may be able to reach a higher viral load, which means it can make more virus particles inside a person. The good news is it s still easily handled by the vaccines, or most vaccines that we know of so that s a good sign. ....

Researchers Consider The Future Of The COVID-19 Pandemic

The pandemic is easing in the US, but still a serious threat around the globe.
SIU researchers are looking at models that may help them predict what comes next for the COVID-19 pandemic.
SIU Associate Professor Keith Gagnon, whose lab has been helping identify coronavirus variants throughout the pandemic, said he s hopeful about the future. But there are still risks, as much of the world lags behind the US in vaccinations.
“The belief is that it s going to take maybe another year or so before it really dies down enough around the globe,” he said. “So while it continues to rage in other countries, it continues to pose a problem and a threat here, especially if a variant emerges that really can cause some reinfection issues.” ....

Reasons for optimism, pessimism in COVID-19 battle

By Jerry Kruse, MD, MSPH
SIU School of Medicine
We have now reached the one-year anniversary of our response to the COVID-19 pandemic. As the burden of cases in our region and in the U.S. declines, there is widespread optimism that the pandemic may be waning. There is good reason for optimism, and some reasons for pessimism.
Optimism: We’re On Course. There has been a great decline in newly diagnosed COVID-19 cases since late January. Central Illinois now sit in one of the areas of lowest activity. Many areas have loosened their guidance and regulations for preventive measures. Whole states have done this, Mississippi and Texas to name two. This is premature. As the mayor of Jackson, Mississippi, said last week, in a challenge to the new state policy, “It is not wise to declare victory in the third quarter.” Yes, indeed! ....
