Police in a Minneapolis suburb where a Black man was fatally shot during a traffic stop say the officer who fired intended to use a Taser, not a handgun.
The man identified by relatives as 20-year-old Daunte Wright died on Sunday in Brooklyn Center, a city of about 30,000 people on the northwest border of Minneapolis. His death sparked violent protests, with officers in riot gear clashing with demonstrators into Monday morning. ....

Failure of gun-rights bill puzzles Smaltz

AUBURN — State Rep. Ben Smaltz, R-Auburn, is puzzling over the failure of his gun-rights bill in the Indiana Senate this week.
Smaltz’s “lawful carry” bill sought to allow law-abiding Hoosier adults to carry handguns without the need to obtain state permits.
It passed the Indiana House of Representatives by a 65-31 vote on Feb. 22.
Twenty-one of the 50 state senators had signed as co-sponsors of the bill, including both state senators who represent DeKalb County, Sue Glick, R-LaGrange, and Dennis Kruse, R-Auburn.
His bill almost certainly would have passed in the Senate if it had been allowed to come to a vote, Smaltz said Friday. ....

Unboxing the Sweetest HK P7 Ever
Let’s talk about a 100-percent ambidextrous, semi-automatic, striker-fired pistol from the Cold War. Oh, and while we’re at it, let’s toss in the fact that it’s a 9mm blowback that uses a gas-delayed recoiling system.

HK P7 PSP is a perfect blend of German ingenuity made to meet a moment in history. That moment was 1972 at the Olympic Games in Munich, where 7,134 athletes from around the world gathered to compete. Tragedy unfolded as the entire world watched terrorists from the now infamous Black September group kill two Israeli athletes and take nine others hostage. The remaining hostages were eventually killed as the German police attempted to seize control of the situation. ....

Man pleads guilty to Christmas Eve shooting death

A Grand Junction man who killed his wife on Christmas Eve 2019 has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.
Aaron Carpenter, who told police he shot his wife, Brianna Carpenter, in the stomach on the morning of Dec. 24, was originally charged with first-degree murder and first-degree assault, Chief Deputy District Attorney Melinda Shishim said. He pleaded to the lesser second-degree charge with a sentence enhancer — crime of violence.
Shishim said Carpenter will be sentenced on May 25 and faces between 24 and 40 years in prison. She said they chose to offer the plea deal after consulting with the victim’s family.
“This is an extremely strong case,” Carpenter said. “The offer was extended based on the wishes of the victim’s family.” ....
