House Resolution to Grant DC Statehood Passes 216-208

Capitol Hill (77WABC) – The first obstacle in granting Washington D.C. statehood was successful on Thursday as the House of Representatives passed the measure in House Chambers.
The measure passed along party lines 216-208 in favor of the Democratic majority but there are swirling questions whether or not there will be enough votes to pass the measure when it gets to the floor of the U.S. Senate.
House Resolution #51, otherwise known as the “District of Columbia Statehood Bill” was introduced by Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC). The bill had 216 cosponsors, virtually guaranteeing passage.

The United States House of Representatives passed a controversial bill last week that one election expert warns “will make it easier to cheat and easier to manipulate election results.”
The House passed H.R. 1, also known as the “For the People Act of 2021” last Wednesday on almost an entirely party-line vote. Not one Republican voted for the measure, while just one Democrat, Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, broke with his party in opposing the legislation. ....

Statehood proposals for the District of Columbia have been around for years. Today, however, we have a President pledged to support D.C. statehood. Congress is controlled by the Democrats, whose platform supports statehood. Eleanor Holmes Norton, the so-called non-voting delegate to the House of Representatives from D.C., has introduced a statehood proposal in the current session of Congress.
