La Crosse advocates press for action to halt cases of missing, murdered Indigenous women

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Indigenous women are murdered at a rate 10 times higher than any other ethnicity, and the number of missing indigenous women is even more troubling, according to the federal Department of Justice, 
May 5  is Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Awareness Day.  Advocates in La Crosse and statewide are raising awareness. 
 No one likes to air their dirty laundry, but in this case putting the problem on display could save lives.  According to a 2016 report from the Urban Indian Health Institute, there were close to 6,000 missing, American Indian women and girls. But just 116 cases were logged into the Department of Justice data base.  ....

RAPID CITY, S.D. The goal is to highlight the epidemic of violence against Native American women and children.
Local organizations such as the Red Ribbon Skirt Society are using the day to raise awareness. The Red Ribbon Skirt Society provides awareness and education for missing and murdered indigenous woman and children.
Not only in the Black Hills, but across the United States.
Lily Mendoza, Founder of the Red Ribbon Skirt Society said “we’re asked to visit in schools, colleges, and community, different events. Just providing awareness speaking to the issue and the crisis and also working with a lot of youth and young women.” ....

DALLAS For the first time, some buildings in downtown Dallas will light up red for National Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Awareness Day on Wednesday.
The MMIW TX Rematriate organization will also gather to remember those who are missing or have been killed at the West Dallas Gateway Plaza with a traditional song and dance. ....

SAN DIEGO, CA Several of San Diego s most prominent sites will be lit in red Wednesday evening in honor of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Awareness Day.
Balboa Park s Botanical Building and lily pond, the County of San Diego Administration Center and the San Diego Convention Center will be illuminated in red starting at 5 p.m. A vigil is planned at 7 p.m. at the Botanical Building located at 1549 El Prado.
Other Tribal Nation representatives will also raise a special flag at the County Administration Center in honor of the missing and murdered. ....

Alluvion Health approved for inmate medical contract


Cascade County Commissioners moved to approve a contract between the county and Alluvion Health to provide inmate medical services, mental health care and treatment program services during their meeting Tuesday morning.
Alluvion Health was one of three healthcare providers, including Planned Parenthood and Correctional Health Partners, to respond to the Sheriff Office’s request for proposal after Planned Parenthood let the CCSO know they would no longer be able to fulfill their inmate medical services contract in January, per Undersheriff Cory Reeves. 
The cost of the first year of services from Alluvion Health is $1.57 million, the most cost effective of the three options, Reeves said during the county commission work session last week. The contract term is four years and is effective starting July 1. Planned Parenthood offered $2.1 million and Correctional Health Partners offered $2.4 million. ....
