President urges democracies to stand against authoritarian regimes

Taipei, May 10 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) on Monday called on democracies around the world to stand together to defend their shared values in the face of threats posed by the expansion of authoritarian regimes.
Upholding democracy, peace, and stability is a responsibility that we all share, Tsai said in her keynote speech by video for the 4th Copenhagen Democracy Summit organized by the Alliance of Democracies, a non-governmental organization.
That is why we must strengthen our global alliance of democracies to uphold freedom, the rule of law, human rights, and space for dissent, she said, noting that authoritarian regimes are working to erode freedom. ....

Ahead of the Copenhagen Democracy Summit in 2021, the Alliance of Democracies Foundation and Latana, an online research company, published this year’s edition of the Democracy Perception Index (DPI). With a coverage of 53 countries, the survey is one of the largest annual assessments of this kind in the world.
In addition to shedding light on the perceived state of democracy during the COVID-19 pandemic, this fourth edition is complemented by original data measuring early signs of a “Biden effect” in world affairs and popular support of projects to achieve closer collaboration of democracies. ....

Taiwan pledges to boost semiconductor supply to Europe: President Tsai Ing-wen

COPENHAGEN (AFP) - Taiwan s President offered on Monday (May 10) to work with the European Union (EU) to boost its supply of semiconductors in the face of a global shortage of chips, of which the island is a major producer.
Taiwan will continue to engage with the EU and other democratic partners to establish a more resilient supply of critical goods such as semiconductors and medical supplies, President Tsai Ing-wen said in a video message broadcast at a democracy conference in Copenhagen.
She also renewed her call to negotiate an investment agreement between the EU and Taiwan.
Taiwan s high-tech chip manufacturing plants are among the largest and most advanced in the world, with the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) leading the market. ....
