WESTPORT, CT Westport First Selectman Jim Marpe, a Republican, announced Thursday that he will not seek a third term this fall as the town s chief elected official.
In a statement, Marpe said it has been an honor serving Westport for the past seven years, but that he believes the town can continue to thrive with a new leader.
While the Westport Town Charter does not place term limits on our elected officials, my experience in the private sector taught me that every organization benefits from regular changes in senior leadership, Marpe said, adding that he deeply appreciated the bi-partisan support and encouragement he received over the years. ....

Gordon F. Joseloff, editor and publisher of WestportNow, former Westport first selectman and an award-winning veteran journalist who reported from London, Moscow, Tokyo, and other world capitals for United Press International and CBS News for more than two decades, died Nov. 9, 2020. He was 75.

He had been battling a rare blood cancer, myelofibrosis, for three years.
Joseloff founded WestportNow in March 2003 as one of the nation’s first community news websites. Since then, it has gained national attention and is often cited as a model for Internet community journalism sites. It has won numerous awards for excellence from the Connecticut chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. ....

Westport Local Press launches with hopes of being a community platform

Between working as an EMT, working at Saugatuck Sweets and an elementary school, Jamie Bairaktaris ’16 never envisioned having time, or an interest, to start a news website. However, a passion for photography and the closure of WestportNow led him to his newest adventure, The Westport Local Press.
Bairaktaris worked as one of the main photographers for WestportNow. However, the site closed after the passing of former First Selectman, editor and publisher, Gordon Joseloff. Bairaktaris felt that Westport had a void of an easy to read, community news platform that needed to be filled.
“The Westport Local Press [is] somewhere where people can go see the pictures, have that visual stimulus, learn about what they’re looking at and not worry about having to pay for it,” Bairaktaris said. “The site belongs to the community just as much as it belongs to me.” ....
