Southeast Iowa child care startups benefit from grant money

The Hawk Eye
The former library inside Corse Elementary is stripped bare, its concrete floors exposed and some walls reduced to frames. But come August, it will be filled with tiny furniture, books, toys and bright colors.
That s when 1-, 2-, and 4-year-olds enrolled at the Corse Early Childhood Center will gather on weekdays as early as 6:30 a.m. until as late as 6 p.m.
A lot of our construction work is down this hallway, because this is where a majority of the child care rooms are, Corse Principal Bryan Baker said on a recent walk-through of the building. To try to maximize this space, we decided to just put 4s, 1s and 2s in here, and then 3s are close to their 3-year-old classrooms. ....

Burlington School District calendar: Changes, key dates for 2021-22

The Hawk Eye
Next year s spring break became a point of contention for Burlington School Board members Monday ahead of their approval of the district s 2021-22 school calendar.
The calendar, which was approved by a 6-1 vote, sets next year s spring break for April 12-18, two week later than this year s spring break, which ran from March 31 to April 2.
Board president Joel Sieren, who last year advocated for a weeklong spring break, argued that it should be scheduled for earlier in the year.
I just remember this year, in talking anecdotally with staff, with students, they were very burned out, couldn t wait for spring break, and on this calendar, spring break would be a week later than it was this year, Sieren said, adding that he felt a late spring break would make the remainder of the year difficult for seniors to concentrate as they would return with only four-and-a-half weeks left before their last day. ....

Burlington School District awarded $180K toward Corse Early Childhood Center

The Hawk Eye
The Burlington School District has received $263,000 in donations and grants to be put toward the development of Corse Early Childhood Center.
Of that money, $180,000 was awarded through Iowa Workforce Development. That money is a portion of $13 million in Childcare Challenge and Investing in Iowa s Childcare grants awarded to organizations throughout the state to expand access to childcare.
The remaining funds come from Burlington Kiwanis, which donated $15,000, and the Early Childhood Iowa Board, from which the district was awarded a $68,000 grant.
The district will begin offering childcare for children ages 1-5 and 3-year-old preschool at Corse Early Childhood Center at the start of the 2021-22 school year. These programs join the Community Action Head Start and 4-year-old preschool programs already available at Corse.  ....
