Digging deeper on carbon benefits

Adam and Jacynta Coffey with their children Will and Sam
Adam and Jacynta Coffey are not interested in carbon sequestration to make a quick buck on their central Queensland property. They’re not even that motivated by the social licence or consumer credibility which comes with it. For them, good carbon management is good business sense.
“Increasing soil carbon goes hand-in-hand with increasing productivity,” Adam said.
The Coffeys appreciate that soil carbon baseline and follow up measurements are required to confirm soil carbon increases. They’ve recently signed on to an Emissions Reduction Fund soil carbon sequestration project as many of the practices they’re employing to build soil health increase the potential for soil carbon to increase as well.

Boosting Jobs: Local Seafood Processing on Horizon

NT Government
The Territory Government, local business and industry are working together to support and grow our local seafood industry, with today’s release of the Seafood Processing Facility Scoping Report.
Territory seafood is high quality produce and at present a large majority of our seafood is sent to southern states for processing.
This report is a key step towards a potential processing facility in Darwin, to grow local businesses and jobs, maximise the value of our seafood and improve access to other markets.
The report recommends that the potential facility should focus on Black Jewfish, Barramundi (wild-caught), Pearl Meat, Trepang and various other species that could be smoked or turned into high-end niche products.

Delmic licenses Cryo Workflow Tools

New product to be launched in March simplifies electron cryotomography
Delmic Cryo B.V. and Max-Planck-Innovation GmbH have signed a licensing agreement for production and distribution of the Cryo Workflow Tools invented and developed at the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Molecular Physiology. The Cryo Workflow Tools are aimed at reducing ice contamination, which is a major obstacle in the cryo electron tomography (cryo-ET) workflow. The new product with the name “Delmic CERES Ice Defence System” will be launched in March 2021. It will help to boost throughput and to simplify the acquisition of new knowledge in life sciences.
Electron cryotomography creates high-resolution 3D views of samples. The imaging technique is widely used in life sciences to examine biological macromolecules and cells. Due to its higher resolution, it offers much deeper insights into the cell structure than conventional light microscopy. To do this, the samples are immobilized in non-crystalline ice and imaged below −150 °C. These cryogenic conditions make it possible to study samples without chemical fixation or dehydration, thereby preventing distortion or disruption of biological structures of the sample. However, sample preparation is very complex, primarily to prevent the formation of ice contamination (e.g., formation of crystalline ice), as this can compromise the structural integrity of the specimen. The Dutch company Delmic, which offers solutions for light and electron microscopy, now developed an innovative technology based on findings of the MPI. The new set of powerful cryo solutions is aimed to help the researchers to prepare cryo-ET samples more easily and effectively.

aiting in the theatre wings, Katherine 'Kat' Skelton feels a shot of adrenaline and excitement before her big role, but seldom nerves.
