Tacoma cops storm wrong apartment, Supreme Court affirms $250K verdict

OLYMPIA, Wash. (Legal Newsline) – The Washington Supreme Court has reinstated a verdict in favor of a nurse who was awakened by cops and forced to wait outside in her nightgown while they searched her apartment instead of the one they were supposed to.
The court’s Jan. 28 decision overturns an intermediate court of appeals ruling and costs the City of Tacoma a $250,000 verdict in the case of Kathleen Mancini.
She was awakened on Jan. 5, 2011, at 9:45 a.m. after working the night before by cops with a battering ram looking for Matthew Logstrom. As the decision explains, the officers expected to find a young drug dealer living in a “somewhat unkempt” apartment but instead barged in on Mancini’s well-kept home. ....

Jan. 28 The Washington State Supreme Court ruled Thursday to reinstate a verdict that awarded $250,000 to a woman whose home was mistakenly raided by Tacoma police a decade ago.
Jurors found police were negligent in failing to verify information from an informant about where a suspected drug dealer they were looking for lived before they raided Kathleen Mancini s Federal Way home in 2011.
The Court Appeals overturned the $250,000 judgment last year. The Supreme Court reinstated the jury s verdict in a 8-1 opinion. ....

The Friends of the Handley Regional Library System and Little Noon Music present a musical memorial tribute to performer Madeline MacNeil, who passed away in March 2020, at 12:15 p.m. Friday. Madeline performed for the library system for more than 20 years. The musical tribute is free and open to the public and will be online on Facebook at www.facebook.com/handleyregional.
