Millions of Australians could receive their Pfizer shots from GPs, in pharmacies and Commonwealth run respiratory clinics after a crucial decision by the Therapeutic Goods Administration to allow the vaccine to be stored in regular refrigerators for up to a month.
It comes amid fresh community transmission of COVID-19 in Melbourne, with a further five coronavirus cases reported there on Tuesday, bringing the cluster to nine.

Previously the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine needed to be stored at temperatures of -70 degrees, limiting its distribution to vaccination hubs with special cold storage facilities. It can now be kept for up to 31 days at between 2-8°C, after being taken out of deep-freeze conditions. ....

Australia will not be vaccinated until November 2022 'at the current rate'

Australia will not be vaccinated until November 2022 at the current rate 21/05/2021|7min
The Grattan Institute s Stephen Duckett says the nation will not be vaccinated until the end of 2022 if the rollout continues “at the current rate”.
“That’s way beyond even the budget projection,” he said.
“This is just not on, we should actually be trying to change that, so we get more done.
“The vaccines are there now, it’s not like it was a month ago”.
The Sydney Morning Herald reported AstraZeneca doses were going unused on a mass scale in New South Wales, pointing to one facility which had 3,000 doses sitting in its government fridge but was struggling to do 50 appointments a day. ....

AstraZeneca clotting concerns do not affect those currently eligible for the jab

AstraZeneca clotting concerns do not affect those currently eligible for the jab06/04/2021|4min
The Grattan Institute s Stephen Duckett says the blood clotting concerns about the AstraZeneca vaccine which are under investigation do not affect those who are currently eligible for the jab in Australia.
“The only question about AstraZeneca is in younger people and we’re not at that stage of the rollout yet, so it’s actually not a reason why people who are eligible this minute shouldn’t go and get the AstraZeneca,” he said.
“The issue is going to be it’s really complex … how you measure whether there’s an excess rate of these clots or whether it’s just the normal rate. ....

Lack of international vaccine supply doesn't explain rollout 'train wreck'

Lack of international vaccine supply doesn’t explain rollout ‘train wreck’06/04/2021|8min
The Grattan Institute s Stephen Duckett says the ban on vaccine exports from the EU does not fully explain the federal government’s failure to meet its vaccination targets since the goal was revised after the block.
“Before we had the blocking of the vaccine shipments the government had set a target of four million, then then blockages started to occur and they revised the target down to two million, quite legitimately in my view,” he said.
“But the problem is even at the new target of two million they only got 680,000 done. ....

Scott Morrison set a simple rule when he invited cabinet ministers to his Australia Day barbecue this week: wear thongs. The dress code was as relaxed at The Lodge as it was in most parts of the country after a summer that could have been so much worse.
Australia avoided a third wave of the pandemic despite the worst fears of doomsayers only weeks ago. But the cycle is not over. The community rolls from lockdown to release, from border bans to booking flights.
Scott Morrison cannot be sure which challenge will come next. But there are five big ones for the year ahead. ....
