Enviro-alliance clears barbwire from Community Forest | Cranbrook, East Kootenay

On the warm clear morning of June 27 (Sunday), the Cranbrook Community Forest’s new Padawan Trail vicinity at Eager Hill became a safer playground for people and critters alike when 16 volunteers from three Kootenay outdoor societies – gloved and armed with wire cutters – aligned to sever, coil, and remove 1.1 kilometers of dangerous derelict barbwire fencing strands.
The coils were piled high onto a trailer pulled by an all-terrain-vehicle (ATV) trailer which made multiple unloading trips back to the highway pullout. The presidents of the three societies involved all participated; Joseph Cross of the Cranbrook Community Forest Society, Brian Marriot of the East Kootenay Backcountry Horsemen – he ran the ATV barbwire coil deposit shuttle, and Chris Bullock of the Kootenay Orienteering Club. ....

Food Bank, Community Garden benefit from COTR gift

Donated garden sheds were constructed by college’s Introduction to Construction students
Two Cranbrook organizations, the Cranbrook Food Bank and Community Connections (organizers of the Community Garden) received the gift of a garden shed, thanks to students in College of the Rockies’ Introduction to Construction program.
“I want to commend College of the Rockies for their meaningful gift in support of Cranbrook Food Bank and Community Connections Society of Southeast BC,” said Nicholas Simons, Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction. “It’s a fine example of community service and will go a long way to support food security in the region.” ....

Bloomfield Hills 'Yellow Cottage' mansion started as modest farmhouse

The color of a daffodil, this picturesque ranch started life as a modest farmhouse. It had two bedrooms, a living room, dining room and kitchen. It shows on a 1920s Bloomfield Township map, labeled “Yellow Cottage.”
Today, two massive additions have enlarged it past 8,000 square feet. With its current flexible room use, it now has three living rooms, plus three sitting rooms, a galley for art, a sunroom and a library.
One large wing is the four-room owners’ suite. In another large wing, each child has his or her own suite plus a shared mudroom, laundry and kids’ living room. ....

Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park had a soft opening of its new 69,000-square-foot Welcome Center at 9 a.m. Monday.
The Welcome Center is where guests can purchase tickets or membership, view an orientation film and receive information about their visit. The center also features contemporary sculpture and horticultural elements.
“The magnificent new Welcome Center is made possible by the generosity of Fred and Lena Meijer; the extended Meijer family; and hundreds of individuals, companies and foundations,” Frederik Meijer Gardens President and CEO David Hooker said. “The Welcome Center was created in response to an unprecedented embrace of our mission as reflected in our attendance, membership and donor base growth. Our appreciation is deep and sincere. Our architects, artists and garden designers have created a place to experience our mission that is truly world class.” ....
