On July 4, 1861, Belle shot a Yankee soldier and started her spy career. May 9, 1863: Confederate raiders arrived at Burning Springs, Wirt County. There they set fire to 150,000 barrels of oil, oil tanks, engines for pumping, engine houses, wagons, and oil-laden boats. ....

No injuries were reported after several Marshall County fire departments responded to an early morning vacant house fire at 79 Oak Ave., Moundsville. According to Moundsville Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief Danny Holmes, they received a call at approximately 4:40 a.m. of possible electrical arcing on a utility pole outside the residence. He said the Moundsville Police Department arrived on the scene first and reported a fire in progress. Holmes said when the fire department arrived on the scene a fire had already begun on the first floor of the structure. ....

But, she can still feel the panic. It’s not modern-day problems like photographers and centerpieces that have her mind and fingers flying. Gordon, a master seamstress in addition to being site manager of Glen Dale’s Cockayne Farmstead, is outfitting everyone from the bride to the minister who will preside over two reenactments scheduled for May 23. ....
