May 9, 1800: Abolitionist John Brown was born in Torrington, Connecticut. His 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry galvanized the nation, further alienating the North and South.
May 9, 1843: Confederate spy ‘‘Belle’’ Boyd was born in Martinsburg. On July 4, 1861, Belle shot a Yankee soldier and started her spy career.
May 9, 1863: Confederate raiders arrived at Burning Springs, Wirt County. There they set fire to 150,000 barrels of oil, oil tanks, engines for pumping, engine houses, wagons, and oil-laden boats. ....

Fire Destroys Vacant House in Moundsville | News, Sports, Jobs

Multiple Marshall County fire departments responded to a vacant house fire at 79 Oak Ave., Moundsville, early Monday morning.
No injuries were reported after several Marshall County fire departments responded to an early morning vacant house fire at 79 Oak Ave., Moundsville.
According to Moundsville Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief Danny Holmes, they received a call at approximately 4:40 a.m. of possible electrical arcing on a utility pole outside the residence. He said the Moundsville Police Department arrived on the scene first and reported a fire in progress.
Holmes said when the fire department arrived on the scene a fire had already begun on the first floor of the structure. ....

Playhouse picks cast for first show of 50th season | News, Sports, Jobs

CAST SELECTED — From left, Sheila Cavalette, Kelsi Ohler, Connie Wendel and Regina Pino take a break from rehearsals in “Four Old Broads” as part of Brooke Hills Playhouse’s first show in the 50-year season. It will be presented May 28-30 and June 4-6 at the Brooke Hills Playhouse located in Brooke Hills Park about 5 miles east of Wellsburg. GLEN DALE The wedding for which Kara Gordon is preparing technically happened 151 years ago. But, she can still feel the panic.
It’s not modern-day problems like photographers and centerpieces that have her mind and fingers flying. Gordon, a master seamstress in addition to being site manager of Glen Dale’s Cockayne Farmstead, is outfitting everyone from the bride to the minister who will preside over two reenactments scheduled for May 23. ....
