Suisun City’s Black History Month celebration features a ‘Rosie the Riveter’
SUISUN CITY The city’s inaugural Black History Month celebration kicked off Wednesday and concludes Saturday.
The theme is “The Black Family: Representation, Identity and Diversity,” which mirrors the 2021 theme of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, formerly called the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History founded in 1915 by Carter G. Woodson.
Suisun Mayor Pro Tem Wanda Williams and the Tri-City Branch NAACP have partnered to plan and implement the city’s celebration.
First in the series was “Soul Food: History, Tradition and Importance,” featuring members of the Reed family, proprietors of Fairfield’s Chez Soul. ....

Black History Month should be a great celebration for all Americans, not just those of us who are black. Unfortunately, the pride I felt about it as a child in the late 1970s has almost dissipated. That’s because instead of honoring those who truly made black history into American history, corporate media, corporations and the politically left have appropriated this tradition into a vehicle for virtual signaling.
President Gerald Ford decreed Black History Month a national observance in 1976, a year that marked the fiftieth anniversary of the first iteration of Black History Month.  Black History Month evolved from the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History’s “Negro History Week,” which began in 1926. Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson and minister Jesse E. Moorland chose the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. ....

Aggies advance conversation, education of Black history


This year, many Aggies have been honoring Black History Month by reflecting, not only on Black achievements, but also on the adversities members of the Black community have faced and continue to endure.
February is Black History Month, a federally recognized and widely celebrated heritage month to memorialize and celebrate African American accomplishments in United States history. The honorary month was instituted in 1915 when Harvard historian Carter G. Woodson founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, or ASNLH, to highlight Black American achievements. What started as “Negro History Week” in 1926 to signify the importance of Black history evolved into the establishment of Black History Month in 1976. ....
