Woodson, Carter G. (1875–1950) – Encyclopedia Virginia

SUMMARY
Carter G. Woodson was a historian and founder of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, the
Journal of Negro History, and “Negro History Week.” Now known as the “Father of Black History” because of his efforts to promote African American history, Woodson wrote pioneering social histories chronicling the lives of black people at a time when mainstream white scholars denied that African Americans were worthy of historical study. Much of his work was based on public records, letters, speeches, folklore, and autobiographies, materials that were previously ignored. Woodson also used an interdisciplinary approach that combined anthropology, sociology, and history. From 1915 until 1947, he published four monographs, five textbooks, five edited collections of documents, five sociological studies, and thirteen articles. He pioneered in interpretations of slavery and Africa, which were adopted by mainstream historical scholars late in the 1950s. Am ....

1. Learn about the history of the Black Cultural Center at the University of Oregon
In 2015, the Black Student Task Force on the University of Oregon campus gave the administration a list of 12 demands. The group wanted changes that would better reflect an environment that was safe and accepting of Black students, and that worked toward the UO’s stated mission of promoting equity, diversity and inclusion.
Some of those demands were never met. But one that was met four years later brings a significant change to campus.
In 2019, history was made at the UO when the long-awaited Lyllye Reynolds-Parker Black Cultural Center opened to cheers of the students who had long fought for it. ....

Dahleen Glanton: It's time to rethink Black History Month

Dahleen Glanton: It’s time to rethink Black History Month
Dahleen Glanton - Chicago Tribune
The month dedicated to celebrating the accomplishments of African Americans came to an end Sunday. This year, more than ever, we should think about the purpose Black History Month serves.
Are African Americans better off this year because February was designated in our honor? Is America, in general, more knowledgeable about the contributions Black people are making to this country?
And are we any more unified as a nation than we were when the idea of promoting the achievements of African Americans was born in 1915, just 50 years after the end of slavery? ....
