Advocates fear DOJ contract would limit legal assistance to immigrants

Immigration advocates say they’re troubled by the slow pace the Justice Department has taken in renewing a program targeted under the Trump administration that helps detainees and others in immigration court.
The concern comes as a May 31 deadline looms for the Department of Justice (DOJ) to renew a contract with nonprofits that help guide immigrants through the immigration court system, including connecting them with pro bono representation.
The Legal Orientation Program was nearly eliminated by the Trump administration, but Congress intervened to maintain its funding.

But now, the nonprofits that work daily with detainees and other migrants say the Biden administration is looking to impose stipulations that advocates fear will continue to hinder the program. ....

The proposed $1.9 trillion stimulus package is being hyped as being for those people that are out of work. Unfortunately, this package has monies that are not being well publicized. According to the Washington Post, here are a few:
• $350 billion for state and local governments. Must we pay for sanctuary city mismanagement?
• $90 billion for various transit and infrastructure projects. This includes a tunnel for Nancy Pelosi in California at $100 million, $100 million for Silicon Valley transit expansion; $135 million for the National Endowment of the Arts and two new bridges at $1 billion.
• $1 billion to the Head Start Program.
• $130 billion for K-12 schools. ....

ICE's Changes to Family Detention Are an Improvement but Don't Go Far Enough

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced last week that it would make changes to two family detention centers in Texas that would result in families spending less time in detention. The agency states that the facilities will be turned into “reception centers,” where families receive COVID-19 tests, arrange travel to their destination, and are released within three days.
The plan would be a significant improvement compared to what tens of thousands of families have experienced. Even so, there are doubts as to whether the plan will work as described. There are also serious concerns with holding families for any amount of time. ....
