Bay Area Reporter :: Political Notes: Gay veteran Rocha seeks San Diego area congressional seat

A gay Latino veteran who fought the military s homophobic Don t Ask, Don t Tell policy and has ties to San Francisco is seeking to be elected to a Southern California congressional seat. Should he win, Joseph C. Rocha would be the second out Democratic person of color elected to Congress from the state.
Rocha, 35, who lives in Escondido with his dog Daytwa, officially launched his campaign July 7 for the Golden State s 50th Congressional District. He is aiming to oust the Republican incumbent, Congressman Darrell Issa, from his suburban seat northeast of San Diego.
Their 2022 contest is expected to be one of the most closely watched in the state next year. Also running are Democrat William Stephen Houlahan and former Escondido mayor Sam Abed, a Republican, with the top two vote-getters regardless of party in the June primary advancing to the November general election. ....

The law firm representing the city of San Diego in a pair of high-profile legal disputes is the subject of a new allegation, that one of its partners threatened a witness in a civil case with personal and professional harm if he did not testify in the city’s favor.
Senior Chief Deputy City Attorney Mark Skeels said in sworn declarations filed this week that attorney William Price, of the Burke Williams Sorenson law firm, sought to influence how Skeels might testify in a lawsuit against his employer, the city of San Diego. The law firm is representing the city in the lawsuit. ....

Pressure rises on Port of San Diego to curb air pollution from shipping industry

Massive cranes mounted on a Dole Food Co. cargo ship hoisted containers at the Port of San Diego on Thursday, powered not by the ocean-going vessel’s hulking diesel engines but electricity.
Before the port’s anchor-tenant started plugging its freighters into “shore power” at the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal in Barrio Logan, pollution was noticeably worse, said Todd Post, lead mechanic at the terminal.
“My truck would be parked here with soot all over it,” said Post, a stevedore with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 29, who was overseeing operations Thursday.
Industrial businesses at the port have repeatedly blamed heavy traffic on Interstate 5 and the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge for the pollution that’s long plagued nearby communities. ....

San Diego Democrats request independent audit of deaths in county jails

The San Diego County Democratic Party is formally calling on its representatives in the California Legislature to request an independent investigation into deaths inside San Diego County jails.
Party members passed a resolution last week requesting local senators and assembly members introduce a measure requiring the Joint Legislative Audit Committee to examine the jail-mortality rate since 2009.
“Under San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore, 159 men and women have died while in custody, additionally costing the taxpayer millions of dollars in wrongful death case settlements, staff time and legal costs,” the resolution states.
People incarcerated in San Diego County jails have been dying at a higher rate than prisoners in other large California counties. ....
