Lawmakers call for action on first anniversary of Breonna Taylor's death

Breonna Taylor and her family deserve justice.
It is past time for comprehensive policing reform. We are working to pass the Justice In Policing Act in the Senate. Chuck Schumer
Several other lawmakers touted the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which bans chokeholds and prohibits no-knock warrants, the type of warrant police used when they raided Taylor’s apartment. The law is named after the unarmed Black man Minneapolis police killed in May.

Insulting Police Could Become a Crime Under New Kentucky Bill

Photo: 4kclips (Shutterstock)
A new bill advanced out of a Kentucky state Senate committee Thursday, and if it passes into law, it would serve as the state’s (and possibly the nation’s) first blue fragility bill. What’s “blue fragility,” you ask? Well, it’s like white fragility, only you add a gun, badge and a massive ego that can’t take an insult without becoming violent. Essentially, it’s a bill that would make it a crime to insult or taunt police officers during a protest because, apparently, one Kentucky Republican who happens to be a retired police officer thinks cops need to be protected from their own tendencies to resort to violence when they feel disrespected. ....

Police Bodycam Footage Shows Details of Jacob Bauer's Death

PLEASANTON — As a wrongful death lawsuit moves toward a possible summer trial, recently released police body-cam video shows a 38-year-old mentally ill man saying I can t breathe, as Pleasanton officers straddled him and restrained him during an arrest.
Jacob Bauer, who was dead by the time he reached a hospital following the fracas Aug. 1, 2018, was repeatedly shocked with a Taser gun during the struggle with up to eight officers, one of whom responded to Bauer that he could indeed breathe because he was yelling.
This is worse than George Floyd, said Bauer family attorney Gary Gwilliam, referring to the Minneapolis man who also said “I can’t breathe” as a police officer kneeled on his neck last July, touching off protests throughout the country and demands for police reform. ....
