INTRODUCTION
Parnel R Campbell, who died on April 19, 2021, a few months shy of his 76th birthday, was my friend, my colleague and competitor in politics, a brother in the law, and a sage adviser. Our relationship spanned over 62 years. I first met Parnel when I entered the St Vincent Grammar School in January 1959; he had enrolled at our premier boys’ school a year or two earlier. Over the years, I followed with profound admiration the development of this extraordinary individual who was possessed of abundant blessings as: Scholar teacher, calypsonian, political and cultural activist, political organiser and strategist, leader of men and women, parliamentarian, lawyer, Attorney General, constitutional and legal reformer, public educator on the law, Christian gentleman of the Spiritual Baptist faith, se ....

Dentons' Senior Partner Edmund Leow on Substance, Structures, Service and Singapore -Asian Wealth Management and Asian Private Banking

Edmund Leow has enjoyed a stellar career in law and exudes the same passion for his subject as if he were still climbing the legal profession ladder. But actually he is at the pinnacle – he has been senior partner at international law firm Dentons, Rodyk & Davidson LLP in Singapore since 2017, joining directly from three years in a prominent role as a judge with the Supreme Court there. That call to serve his country came after 26 years practising law at the prestigious Baker & McKenzie, first in London from 1987 and then in Singapore. Hubbis was privileged to enjoy his company via video call in early January, during which we learned much of the increasing dynamism of wealth structuring and estate and succession planning in Singapore. Leow explained that more relevant and tax-effective structures have become available in recent years, helping the island republic attract more ultra-wealthy families to its shores to establish vehicles and family offices, and thereby helping Singap ....

Emily Maitlis
Six years ago I took my son, Milo, to Bucharest for his birthday. In the baking July sun, seeking shade, we crouched on the kerb in front of the presidential palace. And I played him the footage of the crowds on that bitter December morning of 1989 as Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife Elena emerged on to the balcony. The speech Ceausescu gave, or tried to give, on 21 December was his last. And it was extraordinary. Ceausescu used his balcony address to reassure, cajole, bribe the crowd. But it turned against him as he stood there. This footage state TV rolling live at the time became the physical, televisual embodiment of power seeping away from a president. The leaders and their bodyguards are above them, removed. But it is those on the ground who now control the narrative that will end his days. We watch Ceausescu’s face as it begins to understand that. He and his wife tried to flee the next morning but they were caught, ‘tried’ for genocide and subversi ....
