UNICEF Afghanistan Humanitarian Situation Report No. 3: Year-End 2020 - Afghanistan

UNICEF Afghanistan Humanitarian Situation Report No. 3: Year-End 2020
Format
Highlights
Of the almost 7 million children aged under-five in Afghanistan, an estimated 3.1 million are acutely malnourished in 2021. This implies a staggering 1 in 2 children under-five are in need of acute malnutrition treatment services to save their lives. About 14% of the total acute malnourished burden in Afghanistan is attributed to COVID-19 (HNO, 2021).
One out of two children are not fully immunised in Afghanistan. Data show that 50% of all health facilities providing vaccination services, reported a decrease of 30% or more of the uptake of immunization services due to conflict and COVID-19. This further led to the outbreaks of measles affecting more than 10,500 children (HIMS, 2020). ....

Community diagnosis in mental health intervention

I want to develop this discourse by introducing myself as a product of a very rich medical pedigree especially in the area of community medicine. I am a medical graduate of the College of Medicine of the University of Ilorin which at the time was relatively young but boisterous with strong emphasis and customisation of her curriculum in the direction of community-based services. We were not only trained for the curative aspects of medicine, we had adequate exposure from the first year in medical school to community medical services. We went to nearby rural settlements in Kwara State in groups and spent a minimum of four to six weeks interacting with the rural population and proffering modest interventions for their health problems after a thorough community diagnosis. ....

Community-based education will reach up to 140,000 hardest to reach children and those living in conflict zones
Format
As signatories to the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan recognizes and supports the importance and value of education, especially girls’ education, in building peace and stability in the country. As per its mandate, the Ministry of Education (MoE) works to ensure that every girl and boy in Afghanistan is in school and learning. UNICEF is proud to partner with the Ministry of Education in pursuit of this shared goal.
Of the 3.7 million children currently out of school in Afghanistan, 1.5 million are in hard-to-reach areas and conflict zones where mainstream schools are not available or where children cannot access them.
