JANESVILLE
The men of a Janesville tank company were among the many thousands of Americans who witnessed the deaths of those we honor this weekend.
The horror stayed with these World War II soldiers, sometimes so strongly that it warped their spirits.
Such was Forrest Knox, one of the Janesville 99, as we now call the men of Company A.
âHe was post-traumatic syndrome before they had a good name for it,â said one of his six children, John Knox.
Forrest could be cruel, and he drank, said John, one of two descendants of the 99 who will speak Sunday at the monument at the Corn Exchange in downtown Janesville.

WALWORTH
The drive to Walworth from Janesville is a pleasant one, with a scenic view of farms, crops and prairie land.
I enjoy shopping in Walworth. It isnât a âwindow shoppingâ town (my grandmaâs term), but there are some great and unique shops. It is also where you will find Nayeliâs Pizza and Restaurant in a strip mall as youâre heading south out of town.
I had heard good things about Nayeliâs, and the reviews were promising. I like pizza, but I like pasta and calzones even better, so I was ready to give them a try.
Itâs gonna be a big week for Evan Pingel.
Despite being a relative newcomer to the stage, the Janesville singer will open for Chris Kroeze at 7 p.m. this Saturday when the Season 15 runner-up from NBCâs âThe Voiceâ headlines SpringFest in Chippewa Falls.
Pingel, a 2004 graduate of Parker High School, admits he couldnât have imagined such a gig when he first started picking strings a few years back. Self-taught and armed with only some middle school band experience, his fledgling career has begun to take off through a smattering of local shows and some Facebook concerts posted during the pandemic.
