Syracuse art galleries explore gun violence in new art exhibition

When curator Karen M. Gutfreund began working on the exhibition “Deadlocked and Loaded: Disarming America,” she spent time reflecting on gun violence in the United States. The topic, which is as relevant today as it was 20 years ago, remains highly polarized.
Ultimately, Gutfreund developed a large group show currently on display at three Syracuse galleries: ArtRage, Community Folk Art Center, and Point of Contact. The exhibit, featuring works by 36 artists, explores the role of guns in our society and emphasizes the impact of gun-related violence on children, women, and people who are marginalized. ....

Lavett Ballard’s exhibit, “Stories My Grandmother Told Me,” is celebrating Black History Month and Women’s History Month at the same time.
The exhibit, which is running at the Community Folk Art Center until March 20, features images of Black women like Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman and Sarah Baartman along with other unidentified women. “Stories My Grandmother Told Me” tells the stories of Ballard’s family while reflecting the past and present issues impacting Black people. ....

Community Folk Art Center: A Welcoming Place for All to Discover Art, Culture and Community

The Community Folk Art Center (CFAC) has been a vital part of the University and city for nearly 50 years a hub of art, cultural understanding and community.
“CFAC is a bridge between the Syracuse University community and the local community, through the vehicle of art,” says CFAC Executive Director Tanisha Jackson. “We bring in the talent of our students, faculty and staff and the community brings in their knowledge and art and we can have a dialogue.”
CFAC features New Jersey-based artist Lavett Ballard’s work, “Stories My Grandmother Told Me,” running through March 20.
A unit of the Department of African American Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences, CFAC is an arts and cultural organization dedicated to the promotion and development of artists of the African diaspora. ....
