Filipina awarded William James Prize in US

Joan Ongchoco was honored for her work on “Figments of imagination: Scaffolded attention creates non-sensory object and event representations.”
Recipients of the awards were chosen by an ad hoc committee appointed by the president in consultation with the executive committee.
The William James Prize is awarded to the “most outstanding single published contribution to the empirical or philosophical study of consciousness.”
Ongchoco primarily worked with Brian Scholl at the Perception and Cognition Lab at Yale University.
She was also part of the inaugural class of Yale-NUS College in Singapore in 2017 where she graduated summa cum laude. ....

How do pandemics change our societies? It is tempting to believe that there will not be a single sector of society untouched by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, a quick look at previous pandemics in the 20th century reveals that such negative forecasts may be vastly exaggerated.
Prior pandemics have corresponded to changes in architecture and urban planning, and a greater awareness of public health. Yet the psychological and societal effects of the Spanish flu, the worst pandemic of the 20th century, were later perceived as less dramatic than anticipated, perhaps because it originated in the shadow of WWI.
