Education Foundation welcomes new E.D.

With the official retirement of Pam Walker, the Education Foundation has formally welcomed Kristin Livingstone as their new Executive Director. Livingstone moved to the valley in February from Jackson, where she was the Associate Director of the Teton Literacy Center.
“My whole life has been in service of education and children,” Livingstone said. “My passion is providing opportunities to students.” She is thrilled to take the helm at the Education Foundation and continue her work supporting and expanding the impacts of public education. “It’s abundantly clear how much this community values public education and want to support it.”
Livingstone cited the recent success in fundraising for the foundation’s endowment as evidence of the community’s enthusiasm and dedication. “Public schools are the fabric of the community, and it takes a whole community to support them,” she said. ....

Additionally, the funding strengthened caregiver skills and resources by supporting virtual education programs. ....

New Haven project aims to reduce gun violence by calling on those most at risk

NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) – Police in New Haven said they’re aiming to reduce gun violence by speaking with those who are most at risk.
On Monday, police, along with federal and local prosecutors, announced that they’d be meeting face-to-face with ex-offenders for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic last year.
“It s so important to have the face-to-face meetings, that face-to-face contact, offer the services, tell them we’re afraid that your at risk, at risk to possibly shoot somebody or be shot, said New Haven Assistant Police Chief Karl Jacobson.
The “call ins” are part of Project Safe Neighborhood, an approach designed to help reduce and deter gun violence. ....

OPINION: Confronting anti-Asian prejudice during COVID-19

“Where are you really from?”
“You’re really pretty for an Asian.”
As an Asian American, I have heard these microaggressions my entire life. This past year, however, anti-Asian sentiments in the United States have been on the rise.
Because the COVID-19 pandemic traces back to China, people have associated the disease with Asian people in general. Many Americans, including former President Donald Trump, have publicly referred to the illness with derogatory names, such as the “China virus” and “kung flu.”
These narratives are ignorant, and this type of rhetoric is detrimental to the public perception of Asians, harming individuals in these groups both physically and emotionally. ....
