Neha Gupte, a sixth-grader at Lincoln Middle School, won the 2021 Alachua District Spelling Bee by correctly spelling the name of a legendary Scottish paradise that never changes — "Brigadoon." “I didn’t know the story of Brigadoon, but I was able to sound it out,” said Neha after the competition. “My mom also used that word during one of our practices, so I’d already heard it.” Neha was one of 28 fifth- through eighth-graders from public, charter, private and homeschool settings who competed recently for the title of the district’s top speller. Because of COVID-19, the competition was held through Zoom with a very limited audience.
Fort Payne High School senior Erica Hughes was recently named a semifinalist for the prestigious Cooke College Scholarship Program. The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, on Jan. 25, 2021, announced the selection of 496 high school seniors semifinalists chosen from a pool of 5,860 applicants and represented 428 different high schools. The highly selective scholarship provides exceptionally talented students who have financial needs with up to $40,000 annually for four years of college, enabling them to attend a top-performing college or university. âItâs pretty surreal,â said Hughes. âIâve learned that the Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship is a pretty prestigious scholarship, so I was surprised to get the call that I made it as a semifinalist.â

Kaci Williams is now a finalist in a national scholarship program, and itâs all thanks to TikTok, a social media app. âBelieve it or not, my mom sent it (the scholarship) to me on TikTok,â Williams said. âShe spent a lot of time looking for scholarships for me and it popped up for her.â The daughter of Chuck and Angela Williams, Kaci said she didnât âreally think I had a shot because itâs a national scholarship.â The Jack Kent Cooke Foundationâs Cooke College Scholarship is selected on students with financial needs and âexceptional academic ability,â according to the foundationâs website. The winners receive up to $40,000 annually for four years of college.
