US embassy nominates Matthew Caruana Galizia for Anti-Corruption Champions award

The US embassy in Malta has nominated Matthew Caruana Galizia for the US Secretary of State’s International Anti-Corruption Champions award.
Matthew is the son of slain journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia and is himself an award-winning investigative journalist.
The US embassy said the award honours individuals who have worked tirelessly, often in the face of adversity, to defend transparency, combat corruption, and ensure accountability in their own countries.
Caruana Galizia was nominated because of his work exposing financial crime, money laundering, and tax evasion .
The embassy also pointed out how Caruana Galizia was a lead engineer in the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists’ (ICIJ) investigations into six major global corruption investigations: Offshore Leaks, Swiss Leaks, Luxembourg Leaks, Fatal Extraction, Panama Papers, and Paradise Papers. ....

The Philippine Senate hailed Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto on Monday, March 1, for his anti-corruption efforts while in office, as senators invited him to their chamber as an honoree.
In a resolution adopted on Monday, the Senate resolved to honor and commend Mayor Vico Ma. Regis Vico Sotto Nubla Sotto of Pasig City for being recognized as one of the International Anti-Corruption Champions by the United States Department of State for prioritizing anti-corruption and transparency.
The Senate resolution, which was drafted on February 24, honored Sotto after the US named him as one of 12 anti-corruption champions all over the world. The US praised Sotto for pushing for transparency in Pasig even before he rose to become mayor. ....

Right to Information activist Anjali Bhardwaj was on Tuesday honoured by the United States with the newly-constituted International Anti-Corruption Champions Award.
Bhardwaj is the founder of the Satark Nagrik Sangathan, a Delhi-based citizens’ group working to promote accountability and transparency in government functioning. “Under her leadership, SNS created legislative report cards and tracked the performance of representatives across a series of categories, defining roles and responsibilities in their role as public servants,” the US State Department said.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the award recognised individuals “who have worked tirelessly, often in the face of adversity, to defend transparency, combat corruption, and ensure accountability in their own countries”. ....
