Covid impact: Foreign travellers visiting UK down 73% in 2020

A new study has revealed that foreign travellers made 11.1 million visits to the UK in 2020, a 73 per cent decline than in 2019 in the wave of the border restriction imposed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The dramatic impact of Covid-19 on the number of UK-bound travellers was revealed for the first time in the study published on Monday by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), Xinhua news agency reported.
During 2020, overseas residents spent 6.2 billion pounds ($8.76 billion) on their visits to the UK, 78 per cent less than in 2019, ONS said.
Meanwhile, UK residents made 23.8 million visits abroad in 2020, 74 per cent less than the previous year and they spent 13.8 billion pounds on such travels, 78 per cent less than in 2019. ....

UK immigration from EU 100,000 a year higher over past decade

A new study claims that 100,000 more EU migrants arrived in the UK every year over the past 10 years than first thought. The latest figures also suggest that non-EU migrants were 54,000 a year lower than official estimates since 2012, according to the Migration Observatory based at Oxford University.

Overall, net UK immigration was 43,000 higher each year since 2012 – 15% more than official estimates. Meanwhile, the research seemingly indicates that government policy on immigration has been unreliable and inaccurate for a decade.
This includes former Prime Minister, David Cameron’s, much maligned effort to reduce net migration to the ‘tens of thousands’ as it was targeting non-EU migration, which turned out to be much lower than the government anticipated. ....

UK Undercounted Net-EU Migration by Nearly a Million Over Past Decade

A report from the Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford has estimated that the Office for National Statistics (ONS) undercounted net EU migration to the United Kingdom by an average of 93,000 per year between 2012 and 2020.
The study estimated that, in total, net migration to Britain was 15 per cent higher than previous estimates from the ONS, with many more people entering the country than initially believed.
The discrepancy between the former figures and the reality came as a result of the structural problems inherent in the previous immigration counting system the International Passenger Survey which was in effect until recently. ....
