Role of infrastructure in promoting SDG 9 in India's Northeast

India’s North Eastern Region (NER) has nine percent of India’s geographical area and contributes three percent to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). However, given its rich natural resource base and strategic location, the NER has the potential to become a “powerhouse” in terms of trade and investment. The NER is unique in terms of the economic opportunities it offers. About 98 per cent of the region’s borders form India’s international boundaries; it shares borders with China, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Myanmar. Given its strategic location, the NER serves as a geographical base for India’s growing economic linkages not only with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) but also with neighbouring countries in South Asia, namely, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal. ....

War and peace

In the discourse of development, one key institution is not so often spoken about, albeit it should it is peace, Hobbesian peace if you will, foremost within a country but, of course, also between countries. However, in the UNDP Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16, it is mentioned as the first of twelve areas to “significantly reduce all forms of violence and related deaths everywhere.” Let us here explore its significance.
If a sufficiently strong central government, with well-functioning institutions throughout the territory and social peace is on one end of a scale, civil war is on the other end. Although deaths as a consequence of war has declined dramatically since the end of World War II, civil conflicts such as the war within Syria and in the region of Congo has been responsible for a surge in violence-related deaths during the last decades. ....

Manifestation of SDG goals and scope for cross-border energy cooperation in BIMSTEC

The Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7 aims to ensure universal access to energy, increased energy efficiency and expanded use of renewable energy through new economic opportunities and jobs by 2030 through well planned, strategic, intergovernmental and time-bound actions. With the motto “leave no one behind,” it seeks to close the electricity access gap and also intends to strengthen inter-linkages between SDG 7 and other SDGs. For the sake of its agenda, SDG 7 encourages cross-border grid connections, on-grid renewable energy solutions and decentralised options that are required to respond to the differing needs of countries and regions.
Indeed, billions of people worldwide are benefited from SDG 7. Hence, it is imperative to review the situation in the Bay of Bengal region, where the electricity demand and supply gap is negative and is expected to grow over the period by 2030. Under the circumstances, is there any scope for cross-border grid connection in this region ....

Moving Forward: A sustainable green transition amidst the pandemic

It is almost a year since COVID-19 gripped the world, but there is no end in sight. With the virus set to persist into the near future, the United Nations has announced Guiding Principles for the rollout of the UN framework “Building Back Better” an immediate country-level socio-economic response to COVID-19. The focus, understandably, is on near-term economic recovery, but it is also on turning the crisis into an opening to steer economies towards more sustainable trajectories. Agendas such as the year 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) may not have anticipated pandemics, but may be still relevant as guiding principles in the transition to a green economy. ....

An ecosystemic delineation of food security for South Asia

The state of “zero hunger” as delineated by SDG 2, has a broader implication than what is often perceived as “food security” in terms of its reductionist delineation through food production only. The inadequacy of such reductionism was highlighted by famines in colonial South Asia (eg., Bengal famine of 1943), and many other parts of the underdeveloped world in the last century. Therefore, the United Nations’ Committee on World Food Security defined food security as the state where “… all people, at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets their food preferences and dietary needs for an active and healthy life.” This definition has many aspects embedded in it: first, it entails the food production aspect to ensure that adequate food is available; second, it embraces the aspect of equity and distribution intertwined in its various forms so that access to food is ensured; and third, it highlights the su ....
