Exclusive - UK's Raab: No doubt some countries are using vaccines a geopolitical tool

By William James CARBIS BAY, England (Reuters) -British foreign minister Dominic Raab said on Friday there was no doubt some countries were using vaccines as a diplomatic tool to secure influence but Britain did not support so-called vaccine diplomacy. Raab was speaking to Reuters on the sidelines of a G7 summit in Cornwall, southwestern England, that was likely to be dominated by the West s attempts to reassert its influence as the world looks to rebuild from the COVID-19 pandemic. Western diplomats fear Russia and China are using their vaccines to gain influence across the world, especially in poorer countries that do not have their own production or the means to buy shots on the international market. Asked whether he was concerned that China and Russia could use vaccines in exchange for influence, Raab said: There s no doubt there s some of this is going about, and we don t support vaccine diplomacy, let alone blackmail. We think that we ve got a moral duty, but also a strong vested ....

Biden and Johnson watch on in blimp form as protesters demand G7 action

By Michael Holden FALMOUTH, England (Reuters) -Blimps of Joe Biden and Boris Johnson floated off the Cornish coast on Friday as hundreds of protesters targeted the G7 summit in southwest England to demand action on the climate, poverty and COVID-19. As leaders of some of the world s richest nations gather in picturesque Cornwall, so have dozens of campaign groups that want to court publicity for their causes and send a message to the Western political elite. Several hundred climate activists - some dressed as blackbirds as a symbol of warning and others banging drums - gathered in St Ives, just a stone s throw from the heavily guarded G7 summit venue at Carbis Bay, and marched along the beach. Carbis Bay is where the most powerful leaders in the world are, said Jenny Shackleford, 59, who with along with her husband Murray, 55, was dressed as a blackbird. She had walked for 6 days to get to St Ives. We are terrified what will happen if they don’t take action, she said. Her husband sai ....

China brands COVID-19 lab-leak theory as 'absurd,' Blinken urges transparency

By David Brunnstrom, Tom Daly and Michael Martina WASHINGTON/BEIJING (Reuters) -U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stressed the need for cooperation and transparency over the origins of COVID-19 in a call with Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi on Friday and raised other contentious topics, including China s treatment of Uyghur Muslims, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Yang, China s top diplomat, expressed to Blinken Beijing s serious concern that some people in the United States were spreading the absurd story about the coronavirus escaping from a Wuhan laboratory, Chinese state media said. Yang, head of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission of China s ruling Communist Party, also told Blinken that Washington should handle Taiwan-related issues carefully and appropriately, state broadcaster CCTV reported. The call came ahead of a G7 summit in Britain attended by U.S. President Joe Biden that is expected to be dominated by Washington-led efforts to counter China s growing influence. The world s ....

Are you supposed to be enjoying yourselves? Queen Elizabeth asks G7

By Michael Holden ST BLAZEY, England (Reuters) -Britain s Queen Elizabeth met U.S. President Joe Biden under the canopy of the world s largest indoor rainforest on Friday as she hosted a reception for leaders of the Group of Seven richest nations, who are holding a three-day summit. The 95-year-old monarch was joined by the other senior members of the British royal family, with son and heir Prince Charles and his wife Camilla and grandson Prince William and his wife Kate also present. It was their first major public event together since the funeral in April of Prince Philip, the queen s husband of more than seven decades. The reception hosted by the queen was held at the Eden Project, whose distinctive bubble-like Biomes house thousands of plant varieties. The project is near the Cornish seaside resort of Carbis Bay on the tip of southwest England, where the G7 summit is being held. As she sat for a photocall with the world leaders, Elizabeth quipped: Are you supposed to be looking as ....

UK, EU seeking 'radical' solutions to Northern Ireland trade, UK PM's spokesman says

CARBIS BAY, England (Reuters) - Britain is working with the European Union to urgently find radical proposals that would solve the post-Brexit trade problems in Northern Ireland, Prime Minister Boris Johnson s spokesman said on Friday. The two sides are at loggerheads over how to ease post-Brexit trade between Britain and its province of Northern Ireland, with both accusing the other of dealing with part of their divorce deal called the protocol in bad faith. We re seeking to urgently come up radical proposals within the protocol to find a way forward, the spokesman told reporters. I think it s fair to say they (the issue) may well come up, but the prime minister was clear yesterday that this is not the forum in which he is necessarily seeking to come up with an immediate solution .. Clearly he will want to discuss it with those that raise it with him .. He may choose to raise it himself. Johnson is due to hold talks at the Group of Seven meeting on Saturday, with France s Emmanuel Mac ....
