COVID-19: Uncertainty Over Foreign Students' Return As China Against Relaxing Curbs

China has said it cannot relax pandemic controls to facilitate foreign travel, signalling that there are no immediate plans to permit over four lakh foreign students, including more than 23,000 Indians, mostly studying medicine in Chinese universities.
Li Bin, vice-minister of the National Health Commission, said authorities would continue to focus on preventing imported infections from spreading locally and strengthen inspection of imported goods.
Some cities have recently seen local clusters caused by imported cases of the Delta variant, including in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Ruili, he told reporters in Beijing on Thursday. ....

Trio of Salukis earn MVC Good Neighbor award

Emilyee McGiles were among 30 MVC student-athletes recognized for the award.
Colquhoun, a native of Melbourne, Australia, holds a 3.64 cumulative grade-point average as a Economics graduate student. The fifth-year senior ranked third in the MVFC with a 44.2 yards per punt average and tallied eight punts over 50-plus yards in 2020-21. A member of the 2019-2020 MVFC Honor Roll, Colquhoun is the Mental Health Coordinator for Saluki Unity and serves as the President of the International Student Union at SIU.
Stone, a native of Evansville, Indiana, carries a 3.88 GPA while majoring in Political Science. The senior appeared in six games for SIU’s soccer team in the spring, which included a season-high 60 minutes against Northern Iowa on March 21. Stone is an active member of SIU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), which included a term as the organization’s President. ....

Universities see sharp rise in applicants from abroad
Eight out of 10 Norwegian universities are experiencing strong growth in the number of applicants from abroad, with demand at Oslo Metropolitan University (OsloMet) rising as much as 184% for international programmes.
While OsloMet had 1,454 applicants last year for studies in international social welfare and health policy, international education and development, and applied computer and information technology, this year’s figure is 4,134, a growth of 184%, according to figures revealed by
Khrono.
Other universities are also experiencing a noticeably increased interest from abroad.
“We have received a startlingly large increase in international applicants for masters studies,” Pro-Rector for Education at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) Marit Reitan noted. ....
