Winchester MP Steve Brine opposes cut to foreign aid budget


WINCHESTER MP Steve Brine joined the chorus of opposition to plans to cut the foreign aid budget.
He spoke in the debate in the House of Commons yesterday over Government plans to cut £4billion, although rebels were denied a formal vote on the issue.
Mr Brine, spoke in support of retaining the commitment to spend 0.7 per cent of national income on such aid instead of the planned 0.5 per cent.
He has held the international health brief at the Department of Health and Social Care, attending G7 and G20 meetings, and seen first-hand that what the UK does matters and influences others on the world stage. ....

The SNP's European trade hubs plan seeks to counter Brexit impacts


The Scottish Government already has trade and investment teams in London, Paris, Berlin, Dublin and Brussels.
The SNP says more are now needed to “strengthen Scotland’s standing on the international stage” and counter “the increasingly isolationist Brexit Britain being pursued by Westminster”.
It has pinpointed two different regions where it believes Scotland can strengthen ties and boost business. These are the Baltics and the Nordic countries, where more than one centre could be established.
Jenny Gilruth, the SNP’s Europe and International Development Minister, said the move comes as Westminster’s Tory leadership “becomes increasingly insular, post-Brexit”. She stated: “Scotland is looking to build bridges with our partners and taking steps to expand our influence. ....

Island gives £300,000 to Covax

Jersey Overseas Aid chairwoman Carolyn Labey confirmed yesterday during a Scrutiny hearing that the Covax scheme had received the sum. The International Development Minister said: ‘We have responded to that programme by giving £200,000 to Unicef and £100,000 to the British Red Cross.’
The scheme has delivered 38 million vaccine doses, from manufacturers AstraZeneca and Pfizer-BioNTech, to more than 100 jurisdictions. The UK has committed £548 million to Covax.
Deputy Labey was asked by Deputy David Johnson what role Jersey played in the Covax scheme at an Economic and International Affairs Panel meeting.
Panel member Senator Steve Pallett said: ‘Do you see Jersey investing even more moving forward in vaccination schemes around the world?’ ....
