Vaccine patent waiver will not be enough - WTO chief

By Philip Blenkinsop BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Waiving intellectual property rights for COVID-19 vaccines will not be enough to narrow the huge supply gap between rich and poor countries, the head of the World Trade Organization said on Thursday. South Africa and India have urged fellow WTO members to waive IP rights on vaccines to boost production. Poorer countries that make up half the world s population have received just 17% of doses, a situation the World Health Organization head has labelled vaccine apartheid . U.S. President Joe Biden said last week he supported the waiver idea, but the European Union and other developed country opponents said it will not increase output. Speaking to the European Parliament on Thursday, WTO director-general Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said it was clear that an IP waiver alone would not be enough. To have solved the unacceptable problem of inequity of access to vaccines, we have to be holistic. It s not one or the other, she said, adding this could not drag o ....

Iran's Rouhani says U.S. will lift sanctions, as another official denies it

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran s president said on Thursday that the United States was ready to lift sanctions on his country s oil, banking and shipping sectors that were reimposed after former U.S. President Donald Trump exited a 2015 nuclear deal three years ago. Iran and world powers have been in talks since April on reviving the deal and the EU official leading the discussions said on Wednesday he was confident a deal would be reached. But European diplomats said success was not guaranteed and very difficult issues remained, while a senior Iranian official contradicted the president. The talks in Vienna are about minor issues. They have accepted to lift sanctions on Iran s oil and shipping sectors as well as sanctions on the Central Bank and others, President Hassan Rouhani said during a televised cabinet meeting. Rouhani was speaking a few weeks ahead of Iran s presidential election, in which the revival of the nuclear accord could boost moderate candidates close to him. Trump withdrew f ....

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union has agreed to a partial truce with the United States in a dispute over metal tariffs imposed by former president Donald Trump and to start discussions on global overcapacity and China s trade-distorting policies.
The European Commission, which oversees EU trade policy, said on Monday it would suspend a planned hike of retaliatory tariffs for up to six months. These would have added U.S. products from lipstick to sports shoes and doubled to 50% duties on U.S. bourbon whiskey, motorbikes and motor boats on June 1. ....

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan s election commission approved on Friday the holding of three referendums in late August that could affect both the island s relations with the United States and its energy security if they are passed.
Referendums have increasingly been used to resolve contentious issues such as same-sex marriage, though they need a turnout of at least 25% of some 19 million eligible voters to be valid, with a majority voting yes to get passed.
The Central Election Commission has deliberated on, and approved, three referendums, it said in a statement. ....
