Harris trip to Asia will show U.S. is in the region 'to stay'

By Nandita Bose and David Brunnstrom WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris s upcoming trip to Vietnam and Singapore will show that the United States is in the region to stay, a senior administration official said, as the U.S. seeks to bolster international support to counter China s growing global influence. Harris trip to Asia aims to establish deeper ties with a network of allies in Southeast Asia, which the United States considers key to checking Chinese expansion. Beijing delays vote on extending anti-sanctions law to Hong Kong -SCMP

HONG KONG (Reuters) - China s top legislature has postponed a vote on extending an anti-sanctions law to Hong Kong, the South China Morning Post said on Friday, as global banks and other financial institutions fret over the impact it could have on their operations. Beijing was expected to formally approve the law for the Chinese-ruled city on Friday to counter actions by foreign governments amid escalating geopolitical tensions. The central government hopes to listen to further views on the matter, the newspaper cited a mainland source as saying. Financial firms have been closely watching a meeting this week of the National People s Congress Standing Committee, the highest body of China s parliament, for signs on how and when the legislation will be introduced in Hong Kong. Beijing introduced the law in mainland China in June under which individuals or entities involved in making or implementing discriminatory measures against Chinese citizens or entities could be put on a mainland ant ....

By Nandita Bose and David Brunnstrom WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris s trip to Singapore and Vietnam starting on Sunday will show that the United States is in the region to stay, a senior administration official said, as Washington seeks to bolster international support to counter China s growing global influence. Merkel to hold talks with Putin on first anniversary of Navalny poisoning

By Vladimir Soldatkin MOSCOW (Reuters) -German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday used her final official visit to Russia to tell President Vladimir Putin to free Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, but the Kremlin leader rebuffed her, saying the jailing was unrelated to politics. The talks, as Merkel prepares to step down following elections next month, coincided with the first anniversary of Navalny s poisoning, an incident that strained Russia-Germany ties. Navalny was flown to Germany last year after being poisoned with what the West concluded was a military nerve agent. Moscow rejects that and alleges a Western smear campaign. Navalny was jailed when he flew back to Russia. We . spoke about the depressing situation of Alexei Navalny, the German leader told reporters after the talks. I have demanded once again from the president to release Navalny and I have made it clear that we will remain on the case, she said. Putin rebuffed Merkel s remarks, while not identifying Navalny by name an ....

Venezuelan government and opposition talks open in Mexico City

By Diego Oré and Sharay Angulo MEXICO CITY (Reuters) -Representatives of the Venezuelan government and the opposition began a round of talks on Friday in Mexico City aimed at overcoming Venezuela s acute political and economic crisis, which has caused millions to flee the Latin American nation. Unlike previous negotiation efforts, the talks will include more than a dozen countries, among them the Netherlands, Russia, Bolivia, Turkey and Norway, which will act as the facilitator. At the National Museum of Anthropology, the parties agreed to a memorandum of understanding containing the road map that will guide the dialogue process. For the talks to advance to a potential agreement, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro demands that sanctions imposed by the United States and Europe on officials and institutions be lifted. Venezuela says the sanctions are responsible for the OPEC member s economic crisis. For its part, the opposition coalition calls to allow humanitarian aid, including vacc ....
