G7 to counter China's clout with big infrastructure project - senior U.S. official

By Steve Holland and Michael Holden CARBIS BAY, England (Reuters) -The Group of Seven will seek to rival China’s multi-trillion-dollar Belt and Road initiative on Saturday by announcing a global infrastructure plan to help developing nations, a senior official in U.S. President Joe Biden s administration said. The G7 is trying to find a coherent response to the growing assertiveness of President Xi Jinping after China s spectacular economic and military rise over the past 40 years. The U.S. official, who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity, said the United States would also push the other G7 leaders for concrete action on forced labour in China, and to include criticism of Beijing in their final communique from a three-day summit in southwest England. This is not just about confronting or taking on China, the official said. But until now we haven t offered a positive alternative that reflects our values, our standards and our way of doing business. China’s Belt and Road In ....

Exclusive - Macron offers UK's Johnson: 'Le reset' if he keeps his Brexit word

By Michel Rose CARBIS BAY, England (Reuters) -French President Emmanuel Macron offered on Saturday to reset relations with Britain as long as Prime Minister Boris Johnson stands by the Brexit divorce deal he signed with the European Union. Since Britain completed its exit from the EU late last year, relations with the bloc and particularly France have soured, with Macron becoming the most vocal critic of London s refusal to honour the terms of part of its Brexit deal. At a meeting at the Group of Seven rich nations in southwestern England, Macron told Johnson the two countries had common interests, but that ties could improve only if Johnson kept his word on Brexit, a source said. The president told Boris Johnson there needed to be a reset of the Franco-British relationship, the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said. This can happen provided that he keeps his word with the Europeans, the source said, adding that Macron spoke in English to Johnson. The Elysee Palace said tha ....

'Whatever it takes', UK's Johnson warns EU over post-Brexit trade

By Michel Rose and Elizabeth Piper CARBIS BAY, England (Reuters) -Britain will do whatever it takes to protect its territorial integrity in a trade dispute with the European Union, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Saturday, threatening emergency measures if no solution was found. The threat by Johnson seemed to break a temporary truce in a war of words over part of the Brexit deal that covers border issues with Northern Ireland, the focus for tensions since Britain completed its exit from the EU late last year. Despite U.S. President Joe Biden encouraging them to find a compromise, Johnson used a G7 summit to indicate no softening in his position on what is called the Northern Ireland protocol that covers border issues with the British province. I think we can sort it out but .. it is up to our EU friends and partners to understand that we will do whatever it takes, Johnson told Sky News. I think if the protocol continues to be applied in this way, then we will obviously not hesita ....

Exclusive: China's attacks on 'foreign forces' threaten Hong Kong's global standing - top U.S. envoy

By Greg Torode, Anne Marie Roantree and James Pomfret HONG KONG (Reuters) - The top U.S. diplomat in Hong Kong said the imposition of a new national security law had created an atmosphere of coercion that threatens both the city s freedoms and its standing as an international business hub. In unusually strident remarks to Reuters this week, U.S. Consul-General Hanscom Smith called it appalling that Beijing s influence had vilified routine diplomatic activities such as meeting local activists, part of a government crackdown on foreign forces that was casting a pall over the city . Smith s remarks highlight deepening concerns over Hong Kong s sharply deteriorating freedoms among many officials in the administration of President Joe Biden one year after China s parliament imposed the law. Critics of the legislation say the law has crushed the city s democratic opposition, civil society and Western-style freedoms. The foreign forces issue is at the heart of the crimes of collusion with for ....
