New Zealand tackles 'vaccine apartheid' with ambitious APEC free-trade plan

By Praveen Menon and Heekyong Yang WELLINGTON (Reuters) - New Zealand is pushing Asia-Pacific trade group APEC to remove all tariffs on COVID-19 vaccines and related medical products, a person familiar with discussions said, but is facing opposition from some members who believe the plan is too ambitious. The proposal comes amid growing concerns that while inoculation campaigns are helping wealthy countries recover, few shots have reached smaller, poorer nations where the virus still rages. New Zealand, which is hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum virtually this year, will push for members including the United States, China and Russia to sign off on two documents related to COVID-19 in addition to the official joint statement issued after the trade ministers meeting on Saturday. All 21 economies are set to agree to apply best practices guidelines on movement of vaccines and related medical products across borders, the person familiar with the discussions told Reuters, d ....

UK gets green light to start talks on joining pacific trade deal

By Daniel Leussink and William James TOKYO/LONDON (Reuters) -Member nations of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) on Wednesday agreed to allow Britain to start the process of joining the pact, Japan s economy minister said. The decision marks another step in Britain s efforts to pivot away from Europe, build global influence and form new trading links with faster growing economies following its exit from the European Union at the end of 2020. Japanese Economy Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura told reporters he welcomed the start of Britain s joining process after hosting an online meeting of ministers from the 11 countries that make up the trans-Pacific trade pact. The United Kingdom’s potential membership would support the mutual interests, common values and commitment to upholding the rules-based trading system shared by the members of the CPTPP, the 11 member countries said in a statement. It would also promote market-oriented principles a ....

Exclusive-U.S. agency not doing its job to halt tech to China's military -congressional report

By Karen Freifeld (Reuters) - The U.S. Commerce Department is failing to do its part to protect national security and keep sensitive technology out of the hands of China s military, according to a U.S. congressional advisory report seen by Reuters. The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission report, due to be published on Tuesday, said the Commerce Department had been slow to create a list of sensitive technology that should be scrutinized before export to China. The lag in developing the list of emerging and foundational technologies, as required by a 2018 law, may exacerbate national security risks, the report said. The Commerce Department, entrusted to strengthen U.S. export control laws, has, to date, failed to carry out its responsibilities, said the report, titled, Unfinished Business: Export Control and Foreign Investment Reforms. In a statement, the Commerce Department declined to directly respond to the lack of a list, but noted it had published four rules on contro ....
