'Beading is medicine': Intricate map connects Indigenous artists across Canada, U.S.

This intricate map took months to put together, a project fuelled by pandemic boredom and a willingness from dozens of artists to come together and pour themselves into a millennia-old practice.
Since March 2020, Indigenous artists from across the U.S. and Canada have been using beading and stitching techniques to create a beaded patchwork of a map of provinces, territories and U.S. states which make up North America, or Turtle Island as it’s known to many Indigenous people.
People beaded their sections and sent in high-quality photos to CeeJay Johnson, a Dakota and Tlingit artist in Alaska, who with the help of a graphic artist, stiches the pieces together digitally. ....

Mind the economic gap: Europe and the US are drifting further apart

Frankfurt/WashingtonFrom the beginning, the coronavirus pandemic inflicted deeper economic scars on Europe than the US. Now their responses to the crisis mean the transatlantic economies are about to drift further apart.
The EU’s “output gap” the shortfall in what the bloc was producing compared with its full potential at the start of this year was double the equivalent differential in the US, meaning the European economy was creating fewer jobs, yielding weaker demand and generating lower inflation.
America will pull further ahead this year, while Europe is held back by less ambitious public spending, tighter restrictions on businesses and a slower rate of vaccinations, economists say. ....

Drift attempt sends borrowed BMW 440i into Vancouver rock face

A 20-year-old B.C. driver sent two of his friends to hospital following an attempted bit of stunt driving gone wrong in West Vancouver recently.
The accident took place on Cypress Bowl Road on Wednesday when the young driver, who only had a Class 7 learner’s license, sped up to twice the 60 km/h limit and “had attempted to ‘drift’ through a hairpin turn,” losing control, sliding across the oncoming lanes, hitting some rocks and smashing the 2018 BMW 440i into a parked and unoccupied Mercedes-Benz GLC300.
Both passengers were taken to hospital, but none sustained serious injuries.
