Tokyo ends workweek with a coronavirus dip as US military reports 34 new cases in Japan

TOKYO – Japan’s capital city ended the workweek with a drop in new coronavirus infections and the U.S. military in Japan reported 34 by 6 p.m. Friday.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government reported 868 individuals tested positive Friday, the lowest daily count since 618 on Monday, according to public broadcaster NHK and metro government data. The city recorded its highest one-day number of new cases, 2,447, on Jan. 7. ....

Coronavirus counts in Japan remain high as government expands emergency declaration

TOKYO Another seven of Japan’s prefectures, including the center of the main island of Honshu, fell under an emergency declaration Thursday aimed at stifling a record-breaking coronavirus surge.
The U.S. military, which has more than seven installations across the country’s main islands, as of 6 p.m. Wednesday reported 12 people recently infected with the virus, including two at a Defense Department elementary school at Yokosuka Naval Base.
U.S. Forces Korea reported 10 new infections Tuesday and Wednesday, most of them at a base in Seoul.
The government coronavirus advisory board on Wednesday approved expanding a week-old state of emergency in and around Tokyo to include Osaka, Hyogo, Kyoto, Aichi, Gifu, Fukuoka and Tochigi prefectures, according to public broadcaster NHK. Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga made the declaration Wednesday evening. ....

YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan The annual flu-shot campaign, SHOTEX, at the naval hospital here provided a mass-immunization dry run for the corpsmen preparing to inoculate thousands of personnel with the coming coronavirus vaccine.
The Nov. 16-Dec. 11 campaign provided Navy corpsmen real-world experience that could come in handy once the coronavirus vaccine is available for the general public, Naval Medical Forces Pacific spokeswoman Regena Kowitz said in an email Friday. ....

Yokosuka's Kinnick High School closes after positive coronavirus case

YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan The on-base Kinnick High School will close Thursday and Friday after one person at the school tested positive for the coronavirus, Department of Defense Education Activity Pacific East community superintendent Ronald Knight said in a message to parents and staff late Wednesday.
Knight did not specify whether the positive case was associated with a student or staff member but said the person was also briefly present today in a classroom at Sullivans Elementary School on base. Students in that classroom will be contacted and told not to attend school on Thursday or Friday, as well. ....
