Port of Long Beach Incentivizes Carriers to Deploy 'Greenest' Ships – gCaptain

Ocean carriers with vessels calling at the Port of Long Beach are set to be be further incentivized to deploy their greenest ships.
The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners earlier this month approved changes to the port’s Green Ship Incentive Program, launched in 2012, that incorporate the international Environmental Ship Index (ESI). The ESI is a voluntary system that identifies seagoing ships exceeding the current emission standards of the International Maritime Organization.
Beginning July 1, 2021, the updated program will include three incentive levels ranging from $600 to $6,000, depending on a vessel’s ESI score. Vessels with main engines meeting International Maritime Organization’s Tier III standard, which require dedicated NOx emission control technologies, are eligible for an additional $3,000 credit, meaning a vessel could be eligible for up to $9,000 on every call. ....

For the second year running, California ranked dead last in a survey of chief executives regarding the best and worst states to run companies.

One out of 50 Americans derive their employment from the economic powerhouse at the combined ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
Even so, less than one percent of the infrastructure spending proposed last week by President Joe Biden would be spent on all “inland waterways, coastal ports, land ports of entry, and ferries,” according to an independent analysis done for The Epoch Times. The analysis is based on the White House’s “fact sheet,” published last week to accompany Biden’s so-called infrastructure proposal.
Of course, it has not yet been disclosed how much of that spending would go toward improving coastal ports, as opposed to improving river waterways, border crossings and ferries. ....

The United States’ top port for containerized imports from Asia reported its best February on record as the nation’s economy continues to bounce back from the pandemic.
The Port of Los Angeles said it processed 799,315 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) last month for a 47% jump compared to February 2020 when the world was just starting to feel the economic impact of COVID-19’s unrelenting spread.
Last month marked seven consecutive months of year-over-year increases and the strongest February on record for the Port of Los Angeles.
“One year ago global trade slowed to a crawl as the COVID-19 pandemic first hit China and then spread worldwide,” said Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka. ”Today, we are in the seventh month of an unparalleled import surge, driven by unprecedented demands by American consumers.” ....
