The story of Mi’kmaq artist Jordan Bennett’s public-art exhibition in downtown Vancouver is well-known to those who closely follow the visual arts.
A photograph of a 19th-century porcupine quill basket triggered a series of events that led to a colourful lens-based work of art on the wall of the Dal Grauer Substation on Burrard Street.
This image is particularly evocative in light of current conversations about colonialism and the repatriation of First Nations cultural property.
Bennett shares the fascinating story of the creation of
al’taqiaq: it spirals in an interview with curator Kate Henderson in the Capture Photography Festival magazine. ....

Recently, the owner of an Italian restaurant in the Olympic Village came under withering criticism for defying a public health order to shut down.
Federico Fuoco’s eatery, Gusto: A Taste of Italy, only had four tables at the time. Its large windows could be opened to create a great deal of fresh air flowing through the establishment. But he broke the rules and the city temporarily suspended his licence until April 20.
He complied with the inspectors order after they visited. This stood in contrast with the other outlier, Corduroy, where the inspectors were shouted out of the establishment by antimask advocates. The city wanted to send a message so each received the same penalty. ....

Some Black Pittsburgh leaders disagree that Black people are only leaving city by choice

Intersection of Centre and S Highland avenues in Pittsburgh s East Liberty neighborhood Since 2014, the city of Pittsburgh has lost more than 7,000 of its Black residents. Most of those Black people are leaving for suburbs within the Pittsburgh metro area. From 2010-2019, for every Black resident leaving the Pittsburgh metro area entirely, 4.6 Black people are only leaving the city but staying in greater Pittsburgh.
This reality has sparked a debate among city leaders. For years, many housing advocates have cited gentrification as the main reason Black people are being forced out of the city, by rising rents and housing prices many can no longer afford. But recently, some elected officials have claimed that Black Pittsburghers are leaving the city by choice. ....
