Wreck at Old Logan Road claims life of 55-year-old man


CHAPMANVILLE — One man is dead following a two-vehicle collision at the Old Logan Road intersection near Chapmanville on Tuesday, April 13.
The crash happened around 3 p.m. According to West Virginia State Police, the collision happened after Albert Gross, 55, of Hewett Creek, drove his vehicle into the path of an oncoming vehicle in the northbound lane of U.S. 119.
Gross was taken to the hospital, where he died. The driver of the other vehicle was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
The crash marked yet another death at the intersection, which has been the site of numerous traffic-related fatalities over the past several years. ....

I’m fairly certain that nearly everyone who has traveled much in West Virginia or even in many other states has at some point noticed the trio of crosses that are visible from many roads or interstate highways. Perhaps, though, you may not know the story behind the beginning of the crosses — one gold cross in the center and two blue ones on each side that are intended to signify the crucifixion of Jesus Christ as portrayed in the Bible.
What I would like to do today is to relate the story behind the existence of the crosses and connect them to all COVID-19 victims in a memorable way that might forever serve to honor the lives of those who succumbed to the terrible virus, just as the crosses are intended to remind us of the death of Jesus. It is my hope that upon each future sighting of the crosses, families and friends of the deceased will be reminded of their loved ones and perhaps reflect upon their lives. ....

Two accused of DUI with heroin and fentanyl with child in vehicle


CHAPMANVILLE — A man and woman are accused by Chapmanville Police of driving under the influence and being in possession of a mix of heroin and fentanyl while a child was in the backseat of their vehicle.
The arrests were made April 7 after patrolmen E.C. Ferrell and M.A. Honeycutt of the Chapmanville Police Department were dispatched to the Rich gas station in Chapmanville on a possible impaired driver complaint. According to a criminal complain filed in Logan County Magistrate Court, the caller said a man was severely impaired and had a child in the backseat of a silver Jeep vehicle. ....

Woman tries to bite cop after being arrested at Kroger


MOUNT GAY — A woman from the Breeden area of Mingo County is accused of trying to bite a West Virginia state trooper’s arm after she was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and trespassing at the Kroger grocery store at Mount Gay.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Logan County Magistrate Court, Trooper First Class M.J. Miller received a complaint through Logan County 911 on Sunday, April 4, that a female was acting disorderly at Kroger the Mount Gay area.
When Miller arrived, he said he saw the woman attempting to open a door of a parked vehicle. Miller made contact with the woman and identified her as Katrina Bryant, 40, of Breeden. ....

Suspected overdose at Best Western leads to fentanyl discovery


CHAPMANVILLE — Police in Chapmanville arrested a man and woman after a possible overdose at the Best Western hotel near Chapmanville led to the discovery of fentanyl and other substances.
Three members of the Chapmanville Police Department were dispatched to the Best Western hotel on Central Avenue off U.S. 119 near Chapmanville on Friday, April 2, for a possible overdose. According to a criminal complaint filed in Logan County Magistrate Court, police found Joseph Dwayne Collins, 39, of Ranger, attempting to resuscitate Kimberly Renee Gillum, 42, of Chapmanville, who was reportedly unconscious and unresponsive.
While tending to Gillum, police say they observed multiple pieces of tinfoil beside her and on the bed. Inspection of the foil pieces led to the discovery of a white powder-like substance, which tested positive for fentanyl when put through a field test. ....
