Obituary: Elder of Hamilton's theatre scene, Richard Sutherland, takes final bow


An electrician by profession and enthusiastic thespian by choice, he went from pushing buttons and plugging things in, to making deals, building relationships and friendships – all on the city’s behalf – as a way of making things happen, and building new audiences in a growing city.
Sutherland died peacefully at home in early April, with his wife and lifetime companion Lorraine Sutherland by his side. He was 63. Theatre bought the couple together, and it would be a constant source of inspiration, love and creativity which kept them strong over a long marriage.
It was a deep bond and understanding which would see theatre items hastily repaired at home or home items hastily rushed to the theatre by Richard. When Sir Ian McKellen came through Hamilton in aid of Christchurch’s 2011 earthquake, Richard provided the only throne-like chair he knew of… straight from the couple’s lounge. ....

A Lotto ticket sold in Northland will be making its holder happy after winning more than $36,000 with Lotto second division on Saturday.
The tickets, sold at Whangārei Pak nSave, was among seven nationwide that each won $36,649. It was the third Lotto draw in a row that saw second division prizes won in Northland. ....

Mostly fine weather is expected across Northland throughout this week.

A mainly fine weather with isolated showers is in store for Northland for the rest of this week. Daytime temperatures will hover between 18C and 20C, dropping down to single digit in the evening and the westerlies will turn to southerlies this evening. Humidity will be around 65 per cent and weather conditions perfect for boaties, surfers, and swimmers.
Surfer safe
A female surfer initially thought to have been caught in a rip managed to safely get out of the water near Shipwreck Bay in Ahipara. Police and Surf Lifesaving were called to assist about 2.30pm on Sunday and an inflatable life raft was put on the water. The surfer wasn t found and police were notified yesterday morning that she had safely got out of the water and didn t require medical attention. No further action was required. ....
