Obituary: Elder of Hamilton's theatre scene, Richard Sutherland, takes final bow

An electrician by profession and enthusiastic thespian by choice, he went from pushing buttons and plugging things in, to making deals, building relationships and friendships – all on the city’s behalf – as a way of making things happen, and building new audiences in a growing city.
Sutherland died peacefully at home in early April, with his wife and lifetime companion Lorraine Sutherland by his side. He was 63. Theatre bought the couple together, and it would be a constant source of inspiration, love and creativity which kept them strong over a long marriage.
It was a deep bond and understanding which would see theatre items hastily repaired at home or home items hastily rushed to the theatre by Richard. When Sir Ian McKellen came through Hamilton in aid of Christchurch’s 2011 earthquake, Richard provided the only throne-like chair he knew of… straight from the couple’s lounge.

Shakespeare, reggae, and mystery as Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival continues

For those who prefer their Friday nights to be a little less dynamic,
Flight Mode is an evening of ambient music in the Picturesque Garden.
A popular monthly event that is usually hosted at Never Project Space in Frankton, this
Flight Mode performance features compositions by Lyttleton-based violinist Anita Clark, and Cave Circles – aka Riki Pirihi – a multi-instrumentalist, producer and conductor from Wellington.
Two Gentlemen of Verona is the result of a collaboration of two theatre companies. One of these is Slip of the Tongue, a group who have established a reputation in recent years for staging fun, fast-flowing summer Shakespeare productions in the gardens.

A myriad of multicultural music performances, raunchy cabaret, classical jazz, suburban drama and even exotic nude dancing are all on offer for arts lovers in the Hamilton Gardens this weekend.
The schedule first few days of the long-awaited Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival is so jam-packed with events, many punters may be faced with making some very difficult choices about what shows to see.
This year’s headline show, Tami Neilson and Friends, will get under way at 6pm on Saturday night on the Rhododendron Lawn with what promises to be a memorable show of rockabilly country music with a few guest appearances.
