Shelburne shipyard survey spurs state scrutiny


On March 8, Shelburne’s director of planning and zoning Dean Pierce received an email from the state advisory council on historic preservation asking for information about the Safe Harbor Shelburne Shipyard Marina.
“We are reaching out to ask if you have any pertinent information about the history and/or significance of this property,” the email said. And it asked for the information to be sent by March 15 for a meeting three days later.
Now locals are worried that the shipyard, possibly the oldest continuously operating of its kind in the country, could lose its historic status.
Shelburne’s historic preservation and design review commission chair Fritz Horton said he was alarmed by the request and upset that so little time was given to gather information. ....

At Shelburne Museum, Denenberg said, We re trying to keep people distracted and engaged though he conceded that it s hard to predict which online programming will appeal to the public. Of the museum s 35 or so online offerings in the past year, a six-week virtual quilt club was its most successful.
Who knew so many people were into quilting? Denenberg marveled.

People's United awards more than $314,000 in grants to nonprofits in Vermont

Vermont Business Magazine People’s United Community Foundation, the philanthropic arm of People’s United Bank, NA, announced the awards of $314,500 in grants to 54 nonprofit organizations throughout Vermont during 2020. 
This year’s grant donations were focused on COVID-19 relief and recovery efforts. Organizations working with communities that are disproportionately impacted by the pandemic were provided with flexible funding to use however it was needed. Funding was allocated to 54 nonprofit organizations that are addressing the communities’ most urgent needs and challenges, including basic needs, workforce development, housing, and financial education counseling in addition to helping organizations pivot to virtual educational programming and the continuation of vital support and family services for vulnerable populations. ....
