Augusta and other large cities got a boost in their COVID-19 vaccinations numbers this week after a state cleanup of data prompted by
The Augusta Chronicle. Augusta s numbers would probably look even better if they included the nearly 19,000 shots given out by the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center in Augusta, which has pursued an aggressive strategy to vaccinate veterans and staff.
Even with better numbers, Augusta providers are facing decreasing demand and are starting to look at new ways to gets shots into arms.
Richmond and Columbia counties both saw a big boost in numbers from the previous week, with Richmond adding 15,651 shots and Columbia with 13,742 more. The rates for both counties jumped up, with Richmond County moving from 18% of adults having received at least one shot to 24% and Columbia County increasing from 22% to 28%. Fully vaccinated rates increased for both, from 16% to 19% in Richmond and from 19% to 22% for Columbia. Most of Georgia s other metro ....

Augusta trails other Georgia cities in COVID vaccination rates

Augusta Commissioner Ben Hasan waited to recuperate from a knee replacement before he got his first shot of COVID-19 vaccine on Monday and he believes there were others like him who were hanging back.
More of us need to take the vaccine, said Hasan, who wanted his shot to send that message. There are many in Richmond County who have yet to hear it.
Augusta appears to trail most of the other metro areas in Georgia in getting people vaccinated as local providers say they are already having a hard time getting people to come to clinics and get the shots. April 23: New COVID-19 cases spike in Georgia and Augusta
New COVID-19 infections in Georgia spiked to a level not seen in nearly two months on Friday as Augusta continued to see a surge in new cases.
Georgia added 1,273 new cases, the highest level since March 5, to reach 873,669 with 33 new deaths for 17,337, the Department of Public Health reported.
Richmond County saw 32 new cases for 19,706 and has added 112 new infections since Monday, according to an analysis by the
Augusta Chronicle. Other area counties had seven new cases or fewer: seven in Columbia for 10,969, two in Burke for 1,768, three in McDuffie for 1,658, one in Jenkins for 725 and two in Warren for 375. All other area counties were unchanged: Jefferson at 1,576, Screven at 809, Wilkes at 669, Lincoln at 508, Glascock at 144 and Taliaferro at 100. ....
