It comes nearly two months after the county cleared “tent city.” “In terms of core basic needs, all of those are certainly being met,” says Joe Davis, with Hearts Beat as One Foundation. His organization helped with the transition of families from “tent city” to housing in a hotel in February. “We can certainly house people, but if that funding is limited to a certain time period, or if we haven’t solved for the greater need for a certain individual, then that becomes a temporary thing, and we’re just kicking the ball down the road,” Davis explains. ....
WCCB Charlotte s CW April 1, 2021 CHARLOTTE, NC – It has been a violent week along a small stretch of road in Northwest Charlotte. On Sunday there were two shootings on Hovis road. Police say one was a targeted attack. A man was shot multiple times. On Tuesday a seven-year-old girl was caught in crossfire when two groups shot at one another. Also on Tuesday, two teenagers were shot in a drive-by on Hovis road. And on Wednesday night, a person was shot on Hovis road, police saying this shooting was not connected to the others. “Anytime you have gun violence and you get children involved, obviously its very concerning. Very disappointing. Very Frustrating,” said Charlotte City councilman Malcolm Graham. ....
Domestic abuse victims await family justice center CHARLOTTE (AP) Audra Toussaint knows the Mecklenburg County Courthouse so well she could give tours. But she didn’t come to know the courthouse as a lawyer or a judge or even as a bailiff. She came to know the courthouse as a survivor of domestic abuse. In the past seven years, 52-year-old Toussaint has taught herself to navigate the ins and outs of the legal system to keep herself and her daughter safe from her abuser. She’s renewed a restraining order against her abuser multiple times, filed motions on her own and appeared before a magistrate at least 10 times. She’s even picked up on the temperament of some of the judges. ....
