NHS gives women Human Papillomavirus Virus (HPV) home testing kits to cut cancer deaths
More than 31,000 women will be offered kits to carry out smear tests in the privacy and convenience of their own homes in a trial, NHS England has announced.
The swab tests will be posted to women or given out by a GP to increase take-up of screening for the Human Papillomavirus Virus (HPV), which can lead to cervical cancer.
The home swab is a simple way for women to do the test themselves, rather than have one done for them by a general practice nurse. ....

What is Hirayama Disease?
Hirayama disease, also known as monomelic amyotrophy, Sobue disease or Juvenile non-progressive amyotrophy is a rare and incurable disease that was first described in 1959 by Dr. Keizo Hirayama, a neurologist, attached to the Chiba University School of Medicine in Japan. It mainly affects young males aged between 15-25 years, generally after they experience their adolescent growth spurt. Technically, it is termed as a lower motor neuron disorder.
Classical findings include muscle wasting (atrophy
) and weakness of the forearms and hands, either on one or both sides. There is, however, no change in sensation and the patient doesn’t experience any pain. There may be involuntary muscle twitching (fasciculations), but these are rare. The disease usually progresses for 2-5 years before stabilizing or plateauing. After plateauing, improvement in the symptoms does not occur. However, it does not worsen either. ....

Qatar- QCS concludes campaign against cervical cancer


(MENAFN - Gulf Times)  Qatar Cancer Society (QCS) has concluded ‘You are Precious campaign to raise awareness about cervical cancer, the sixth most diagnosed cancer among females in Qatar according to Qatar National Cancer Registry (QNCR) 2016 at the Ministry of Public Health. The campaign included many virtual workshops and competitions to raise awareness about signs, symptoms and risk factors about the disease and encouraged early detection by distributing 100 vouchers to do Pap Smear test free in Al Ahli Hospital.
Specialists including Dr Aisha al-Thani from Aisha Salman al-Thani Centre; Dr Sahar al-Ani, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at the Middle East Centre; Nour al-Bisani from Diet Delight Centre; Dr Nagham al-Kreedi at Al-Dafna Medical Centre, as well as media figure Amal Abdul-Malik participated in the campaign. ....
