In search of heroes

Like most Filipinos, I did not have the privilege of knowing President Noynoy Aquino “up, close and personal.”  I only listened to his speeches and watched him in action from newspapers and television.  The only opportunity I had to meet him was when he conferred Mr. Washington SyCip the Order of Lakandula.  He bowed his head as I shook his hand and acknowledged my greetings with a smile.
But I am one of the thousands of Filipinos who mourn his death and feel the pain of his loss.  By his work, we were able to know him.  He brought financial stability to government and lifted the poor from poverty through his Cash Transfer Program.  For one brief shining moment, there was no corruption in Public Works.  He steered the passage of difficult reforms such as the reproductive rights of women and the increase in cigarette tax rates.  Most of all, he regained our respect as well that of the world’s.  He led   a government that respects our rights and values the digni ....

Whatever little I have gained in life, I owe in large part to the University of the Visayas. The University opened many doors for me: to education, journalism, the law and teaching. I would not have gone far in college without the scholarship that I enjoyed throughout my seven years, three in liberal arts and four in law school.
I was close to both Gullas brothers. Sir Eddie became my law partner after he stepped down as Cebu governor, but I was closer to Sir Dodong first because it was him that I dealt with most of the time while his brother was in politics. We spoke a lot, did business once and collaborated on the University’s sports program. I learned a lot from him and even more importantly about him. ....

The Chinese Mestizos and the Formation of the Filipino Nationality
The recorded history of the Philippines would be incomplete as a basis for understanding contemporary society unless it takes into account the Chinese mestizos contributions to our development as a nation.
The Chinese mestizos were an important element of Philippine society in the 19th century. They played a significant role in the formation of the Filipino middle class, in the agitation for reforms, in the 1898 revolution, and in the formation of what is now known as the Filipino nationality. In contemporary times their role in nation-building continues. ....

The old Woodsman Tavern space became home to Tasty N Daughters, a restaurant from chef John Gorham on Southeast Division Street.
Earlier this month, as we began to sort through the wreckage wrought by COVID-19, we asked our readers to name the restaurant closures that had impacted them the most in 2020. We received nearly 150 responses, including stories of sushi counters, bagel shops, queer-friendly vegan bakeries, bars designed for lingering over board games and hotel restaurants that understood the meaning of hospitality. Here are our favorite selections from those memories, lightly edited for length and clarity. ....
