Journal Record Week in Review for the week ending March 5, 2021

The retail sector is bouncing back from the pandemic with new businesses opening and increased sales forecast. Roy Williams, president and CEO of the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber, noted two programs launched last year that helped small retailers stay in business. The chamber, in partnership with the city’s commercial districts, kicked off the Stand Tall Shop Small for OKC campaign in June. The chamber also joined the Alliance for Economic Development of Oklahoma City as partners with the city to implement the Small Business Continuity Program, which offered business owners and nonprofits with 100 or fewer full-time employees COVID-19 disaster relief funds. The program shined light on the challenges small businesses were facing, Williams said. ....

O’Connor: Small businesses continue to benefit from OKC program
Cathy O’Connor
Over the past month, I’ve shared several stories about local businesses and nonprofits helped with funding and technical assistance from the Small Business Continuity Program. When asked about what impact these support programs made on their business, many tell us it was their lifeline.
That’s the case with Blue Seven, the clothing and gift boutique on May Avenue. They used their SBCP grant to maintain their payroll and health insurance for employees and pay their rent and utilities during the lowest points in the pandemic. They built a plexiglass shield for the register and adjusted the layout and combined inventory into a smaller space. The store is seeing a steady increase in customers after doing everything possible to stay open. ....

O’Connor: Small businesses, nonprofits helped through program

A few weeks ago, I shared stories about how The Study, Swiss Cleaners and ReMerge responded to COVID-19 with creativity and used funding and technical assistance from the Small Business Continuity Program to help meet some of the challenges brought on by the pandemic. There are hundreds of similar success stories – small businesses and nonprofits that have changed, dramatically or ever so slightly, to better communicate, reach out, encourage sales and preserve their business.
DentalWorks by Dr. Edwina V. Johnson received a grant from the Small Business Continuity Program to purchase protective equipment that allowed the business to continue seeing patients. Through the technical assistance program, the dental practice worked with a marketing company to create a new website that better told prospective patients about its services and accepted electronic forms, finally replacing the time-c ....

COVID-19 required small businesses and nonprofits to quickly change how they provide goods and services. In-person shopping, eating, events and other connections have been replaced, at least in part, by virtual contact. Some businesses and nonprofits have shown true resilience.
The Study, a 64-tap wine bar with beer, spirits and games that opened in Film Row just as the pandemic hit, purchased air purifiers for each room, added screens to divide the open bar and laminated menus. Equipment was reimbursed through the Small Business Continuity Program’s retrofit funding. The Study also added seating outdoors, thanks to the new Streateries permitting process from the city of Oklahoma City to convert parking spaces to outdoor seating. The Study also extended services beyond their walls. They reinvented wine tastings in a virtual setting, with curbside wine pickup, suggestions for ....
