WASHINGTON, D.C. â A group of bipartisan lawmakers unveiled two emergency relief bills Monday that they hope will help struggling Americans get through the COVID-19 pandemic.
The same group of senators and representatives introduced a $908 billion bill earlier this month, but they couldnât secure enough support. So, they broke the bill up into two with the hopes of passing something as the coronavirus continues to ravage the country.
One bill is called the Bipartisan COVID-19 Emergency Relief Act of 2020. It would provide as much as $748 billion in relief to American students, families, businesses, workers, and health care providers. ....

Under the more controversial bill, people who sue claiming a business was the source of their coronavirus infection or that of a loved one would have to show proof of gross negligence.
Not all members of the bipartisan group support the new protections, but all Republicans in the group support it, as does Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, who played a leading role in the talks.
Sen. Maggie Hassan, a Democrat from New Hampshire, said at the press conference that Democrats viewed the current language for the protections as shielding businesses for issues unrelated to the pandemic. ....

A bipartisan group of lawmakers unveiled a $908 billion coronavirus rescue package Monday, with a potential deal coming down to the wire since Congress has until the end of the week to strike an agreement that can be tied to longer-term spending legislation.
Economists have stressed the need for additional aid as 12 million Americans could lose their unemployment benefits the day after Christmas. Eviction moratoriums for renters and protections for student borrowers are also set to expire, as well as a federal program for paid family leave.
The package is split into two bills. The larger, $748 billion bill, called the Bipartisan Emergency COVID Relief Act of 2020, includes enhanced unemployment benefits. It would also temporarily extend an eviction moratorium and federal student loan forbearance, according to a summary of the proposal, which was obtained by USA TODAY. ....
